Find axolotls in lush caves, collect one with an empty water bucket, and use buckets of tropical fish to attract and breed them. Axolotls cannot be tamed. The precise spawn detail—water above clay blocks—is specified in the Java Edition 1.18 release notes, so treat it as version-specific rather than universal.
Where to find axolotls in Minecraft
Axolotls spawn in lush caves. Azalea trees on the surface are a useful clue: lush caves are typically found beneath them. In the Java Edition 1.18 release notes, Minecraft specifies that axolotls spawn in water above clay blocks. That clay condition is documented for Java 1.18 and may not apply unchanged to other editions, versions, servers, or add-ons.
Minecraft’s biome guide lists both axolotls and tropical fish among creatures that can appear in lush caves. You can use the Minecraft biome guide to learn more about the biome, and consult the Java Edition 1.18 release notes for the clay-block spawn detail.
How to collect and transport an axolotl
- Equip an empty water bucket.
- Use the bucket on the axolotl to pick it up. The result is a bucket of axolotl that you can carry.
- Use the bucket again where you want to release it.
Bucket transport is useful for long journeys. Axolotls can spend some time on land, but they need to return to water. Minecraft explains the item and its use in Taking Inventory: Bucket of Axolotl.

Can you tame an axolotl?
No. Axolotls cannot be tamed as pets. You can, however, hold a bucket of tropical fish to make nearby axolotls follow you, on land or in water. This attracts them; it does not tame them. Minecraft states this distinction in its Bedrock Edition Caves & Cliffs Part I notes.
What do axolotls eat?
For attracting and breeding axolotls, use a bucket of tropical fish. Holding the bucket attracts nearby axolotls; feeding one to an axolotl is the interaction used for breeding. The official Bedrock release notes specify buckets of tropical fish, so do not assume an ordinary tropical-fish item works the same way across editions and versions.

How to breed axolotls
- Get two axolotls together in a suitable area.
- Use a bucket of tropical fish on each axolotl.
- After both have been fed, they can breed.
Blue axolotls are described in the Bedrock release notes as a low-chance mutation when breeding two axolotls. The cited notes do not give a probability, so no exact odds are included here. Breeding behavior and implementation can vary with edition, version, server configuration, or add-ons.

Minecraft lists five axolotl colors:
- Blue
- Cyan
- Gold
- Wild (brown)
- Leucistic (pink)
Blue is the rare breeding mutation noted in the Bedrock release notes. Minecraft’s axolotl bucket guide names all five colors.
