Minecraft’s spear is a tiered weapon with jab and charge attacks, and its charge deals more damage as you move faster. Mojang calls it the game’s first tiered weapon “in quite some time,” but the official sources reviewed do not verify the headline’s exact claim that it is the first new tiered tool in 15 years. They describe it as a weapon, not a tool.
What does the Minecraft spear do?
The spear is designed for both melee and mounted combat. Mojang’s Mounts of Mayhem reveal, published September 27, 2025, describes two attacks: jab and charge.
Jab keeps enemies at a distance
Jab is the spear’s close-combat option. Mojang presents it as a way to keep foes at a distance, making spacing part of how the weapon is used rather than simply trading hits at close range.
Charge rewards movement and positioning
Charge damage scales with the player’s movement speed: the faster you travel while wielding the spear, the more damage it can deal. Mounted travel is one example in Mojang’s reveal. A carefully positioned charge can also knock an enemy off a mount. The official Java Edition 1.21.11 notes likewise describe charge damage in relation to precision and mount speed.

Which materials can you craft it from?
The official reveal lists five materials for crafting the spear. The material changes the weapon’s stats, but the cited announcement does not give a complete numerical stat table for each tier.

When did the spear arrive in Minecraft?
The spear is listed among the new features in the official Java Edition 1.21.11 Mounts of Mayhem release notes. Mojang’s updates timeline places Mounts of Mayhem in its December 2025 entries. The feature reveal came earlier, on September 27, 2025; a reveal date is not the same as the release date.
Is it really Minecraft’s first new tiered tool in 15 years?
That exact claim is not supported by the official sources cited here. Mojang’s fall 2025 recap describes the spear as “our first tiered weapon in quite some time,” without giving a number of years. The reveal and Java release notes call it a weapon, not a tool. The safest description is that the spear is a newly added tiered weapon; the precise 15-year interval and the word “tool” go beyond what those sources establish.

That distinction matters because “tiered” refers to the material-based versions of the spear, while “weapon” is Mojang’s own category for it. The official recap’s wording supports calling it a notable return to tiered weapon design, but not dating the previous example to exactly 15 years earlier.

The snapshot notes also said Lunge could only be used with at least 6 hunger points. These are values documented for Snapshot 25w43a, published October 21, 2025; they should not be treated as a guarantee for every later version. The same snapshot introduction said charge attacks would deal more damage and provide visual feedback when a target was landed.
