Minecraft Bedrock Preview 1.21.80.25, published April 3, 2025, gave testers their first look at Vibrant Visuals alongside experimental Dried Ghast, Ghastling and Happy Ghast features. It was a historical preview build, not the later full release: Mojang’s Bedrock 1.21.90 notes place Vibrant Visuals and the Happy Ghast in the Chase the Skies update.

What Preview 1.21.80.25 added

The April 3, 2025 preview combined an early graphics test with new ghast-related gameplay. The ghast features required the “Drop 2 2025” experiment to be enabled in a world. Mojang described Vibrant Visuals as its first test of the rendering mode and cautioned that its lighting, effects and assets were still in development.

The preview was a testing milestone; its experimental recipes and settings should not be mistaken for the mechanics of later releases.

How the Dried Ghast becomes a Happy Ghast

The preview’s progression ran from Dried Ghast to Ghastling to Happy Ghast. It combined a structure find or a version-specific crafting recipe with water, time and snowballs.

Find or craft a Dried Ghast

In this preview, Dried Ghasts could be found in Nether Fossil structures or crafted from one bone block and eight Ghast Tears. That recipe is specific to Preview 1.21.80.25: the later 1.21.90 changelog lists one Soul Sand Block and eight Ghast Tears instead.

Waterlog it to produce a Ghastling

Keep the Dried Ghast continuously waterlogged. In the preview, it passed through three states over about 20 minutes before producing a Ghastling. Taking it out of water caused it to revert toward its dry state.

Raise the Ghastling

A Ghastling could follow nearby players or certain mobs. Snowballs could tempt or feed it; after about 20 minutes it matured into a Happy Ghast, with feeding speeding up the process.

Harnesses and riding

A harness let players ride a Happy Ghast, which could carry up to four players. The preview recipe used three leather, two glass blocks and one wool block; the wool set the harness color. Shears could remove the harness when no one was mounted.

How to enable Vibrant Visuals in the preview

  1. Enable the experiment for a world: on the Create New World or Edit World screen, open the Experimental tab and turn on the Vibrant Visuals toggle.
  2. Select the graphics mode: enter that world, open Video settings, and choose Vibrant Visuals under Graphics Mode.
  3. Choose a preset: select “Favor Visuals” or “Favor Performance.” For further adjustments, open Vibrant Visuals Options.

Vibrant Visuals was a world-level experimental setting in this preview, not a universal graphics switch. Availability depended on the device and graphics support listed in the changelog.

Devices listed at the time

Mojang’s preview notes listed Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5, Android, iOS, and PC running Minecraft on DX12. The listed Android graphics hardware was Adreno 640, Mali-G68, Mali-G77 or Xclipse 530 and higher; for iOS, the notes specified A12 or M1 and higher. Mojang said support was still being tested on additional devices, so this is the preview’s then-current list, not a guarantee for every device or a current compatibility matrix.

Compatibility limits

Split-screen was not supported with Vibrant Visuals. Local multiplayer switched rendering to Fancy or Simple. Marketplace Add-Ons, Skins and Persona items worked, while Worlds and Texture Packs were incompatible with the mode at that point.

Known issues disclosed for the first test

Mojang’s preview notes identified several visual problems. These are issues reported for that test build, not claims that they persisted in later releases.

  • Android could show visual corruption, particularly on Mali GPUs.
  • Surfaces deeper than eight blocks underwater could appear dark.
  • Light leaks or shadows could pop near caves.
  • Textures could turn pink after suspending and resuming the game, opening Settings or exiting a world.
  • Metallic surfaces could render incorrectly.
  • Emissive surfaces could fail to glow or appear white.

Where the features went after the preview

Mojang’s later Bedrock 1.21.90 changelog identifies Chase the Skies as the release that brought Vibrant Visuals and the Happy Ghast to Bedrock. It describes Vibrant Visuals as a cosmetic enhancement that does not affect gameplay, and confirms that a harnessed Happy Ghast can carry up to four players. The changelog’s Dried Ghast recipe also differs from the one in 1.21.80.25, so use the recipe for the version being played rather than carrying the preview recipe forward.
