In Minecraft, a lava “generator” is a pointed-dripstone farm that slowly fills a cauldron—not an endless flowing lava source. Put a lava source above the block holding the dripstone, then place a cauldron beneath the dripstone tip. When the cauldron fills, collect the lava with an empty bucket.
What you need
- A lava source block
- One solid block to support the dripstone, plus suitable nonflammable blocks to contain the lava
- Pointed dripstone
- A cauldron
- An empty bucket for collecting the finished lava
A cauldron can be crafted in a U-shape from seven iron ingots, or found in the world, according to Minecraft’s cauldron guide. The farm itself does not require a dripstone block: it uses pointed dripstone.

How to build the lava farm
- Choose a safe spot and place a solid support block.
- Place the lava source directly above that support block. Use nonflammable blocks around the lava to help contain it.
- Attach pointed dripstone to the underside of the support block so it hangs down.
- Place a cauldron below the dripstone tip, leaving an unobstructed air path between the tip and the cauldron. The dripstone may touch the cauldron.
The Minecraft Wiki’s lava-farming tutorial specifies that the stalactite can be no more than ten blocks tall, and the cauldron must be within ten blocks below its tip. Keep the lava source directly above the block the dripstone hangs from; intervening non-air blocks between the tip and cauldron prevent the setup from working.
How it works and how to collect the lava
Pointed dripstone beneath a liquid source can occasionally fill a cauldron. Minecraft’s dripstone guide describes the chance as small, so expect a wait: the cauldron fills intermittently rather than producing a continuous stream. The current official guide does not give a numeric fill chance or average waiting time.

When the cauldron is full, use an empty bucket on it to collect the lava. Minecraft’s cauldron guide confirms that an empty bucket removes the contents.

- No lava source above the support: Check that the source block is directly over the block holding the dripstone.
- Dripstone is too long or cauldron too far away: Keep the stalactite at ten blocks or fewer and the cauldron within ten blocks beneath its tip.
- Something blocks the gap: Clear any non-air blocks between the tip and cauldron.
- Expecting immediate or continuous output: The cauldron fills only occasionally; it is not a flowing lava source.
Java and Bedrock considerations
The official Minecraft guides establish the dripstone-and-cauldron mechanic but do not provide a current Java-versus-Bedrock comparison. Exact edition parity and timing should not be assumed; if the setup does not behave as described, check guidance for the specific edition and version you play.
