When did Minecraft 1.20 come out?
Mojang announced that Trails & Tales would be available to download for free starting June 7, 2023, and confirmed the update’s availability on release day. It was released for both Java Edition and Bedrock Edition. Mojang’s announcement listed Java Edition for Windows, macOS, and Linux, and Bedrock Edition for Xbox, PlayStation, Nintendo Switch, iOS, Android, Windows, and Chromebook.

What time did Minecraft 1.20 release?
The official announcement and release information give June 7, 2023, but no specific hour or time zone. An exact time—or a region-by-region launch schedule—cannot be confirmed from those official details.
How to update Minecraft to 1.20
The steps depend on your edition and platform. These are the update procedures documented in Minecraft’s general instructions; menus may have changed since the 2023 release.

- Minecraft is a game about placing blocks and going on adventures
- Explore randomly generated worlds and build amazing things from the simplest of homes to the grandest of castles
- Play in creative mode with unlimited resources or mine deep into the world in survival mode, crafting weapons and armor to fend off the dangerous mobs
- Play on the go in handheld or tabletop modes
- Includes Super Mario Mash-Up, Natural Texture Pack, Biome Settlers Skin Pack, Battle & Beasts Skin Pack, Campfire Tales Skin Pack; Compatible with Nintendo Switch only
Java Edition on PC or Mac
- Open the Minecraft Launcher.
- If the launcher does not show the latest release, open the arrow beside Play and select Latest Release.
- Start the game from the launcher.
iPhone, iPad, or Android
- Open the App Store on iOS or Google Play on Android.
- Search for Minecraft.
- Tap the update prompt if one appears and the game is not current.
Xbox
- Open My Apps & Games and select Minecraft.
- Open the more-options menu, then choose Manage game & add-ons > Updates.
PlayStation 4
If automatic updates are enabled, the update should install automatically. Otherwise, select Minecraft, press Options, and choose Check for Update.
Other platforms
The general instructions cited here do not provide individual steps for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation consoles other than PS4, Chromebook, or Bedrock Edition on Windows. Use the current update process provided by your platform rather than assuming that the menus above apply.

What did the Trails & Tales update add?
The Java 1.20 release notes list additions and changes including:
- Archaeology, the sniffer, torchflowers, and pitcher plants
- Camels and cherry groves, including cherry wood
- Armor trims, smithing templates, and bamboo wood
- Chiseled bookshelves, hanging signs, and expanded sign customization
- Calibrated sculk sensors and playable mob sounds from mob heads placed on note blocks
Bedrock’s 1.20.0 notes also documented platform-specific fixes and known issues. One launch-era note warned that some boats placed before updating might need to be broken and replaced, and that mobs in boats could be ejected the first time a world loaded. That was a release-time warning, not a current general troubleshooting instruction.
