Minecraft Java Edition 1.21, the Tricky Trials update, launched on June 13, 2024 with the Crafter: an in-game block that uses Redstone pulses to craft recipes automatically. Mojang first introduced it as an experimental feature in October 2023, but it is no longer just a preview feature.
What the Crafter does
The Crafter automates a task players normally perform at a crafting table: placing recipe ingredients into a grid. In Java Edition 1.21, it has a 3×3 grid, and a Redstone pulse tells it to craft the available recipe. The block then ejects the result from its front face.
Each grid slot can be toggled off so it cannot accept items. This lets you constrain ingredient placement to the positions a recipe needs. The Crafter previews the result before activation, helping you check what the loaded ingredients will make.
How to make a Crafter in Java Edition 1.21
The Java Edition 1.21 recipe requires five Iron Ingots, two Redstone Dust, one Crafting Table, and one Dropper, as listed in the official 1.21 release notes.

How automated crafting works
- Load the recipe ingredients into the Crafter’s 3×3 grid.
- Toggle off any slots that should not accept ingredients, so items are placed in positions compatible with the recipe.
- Supply a Redstone pulse. The Crafter executes the recipe and ejects one crafting result at a time from its front face.
- Collect the output and provide more ingredients and pulses if you want the process to continue.
For recipes that leave remainder items, such as a bucket after crafting a recipe that uses a filled bucket, the remainder can eject alongside the result. A surrounding Redstone build therefore needs to account for both outputs if it is meant to feed or collect items automatically. The Snapshot 23w42a notes document the configurable grid, pulse activation, and output direction; the final 1.21 notes specify the one-result-at-a-time behavior and remainder handling.
What changed between preview and release
Mojang introduced the Crafter in Minecraft Preview 1.20.50.21 on October 18, 2023, where it was available for experimental testing. The preview described loading ingredients, choosing a recipe, and using a Redstone pulse to produce an item. Java Snapshot 23w42a then documented the configurable 3×3 grid and Redstone behavior for Java testing. The block shipped with Java Edition 1.21 on June 13, 2024. These dates distinguish the early experimental appearance from the completed release feature.

Manual crafting gives you direct control over each placement and output. The Crafter is useful when a recipe can be supplied by a surrounding Redstone and item-handling setup, then triggered without a player placing the ingredients by hand. It does not make a complete factory on its own: the build still has to deliver the right ingredients, send pulses at suitable times, and route the result and any remainder items.
