Minecraft: Pocket Edition Alpha 0.1 launched for the Sony Ericsson Xperia PLAY on August 16, 2011, and was initially exclusive to the phone for a limited time. That confirms the game’s original Xperia PLAY release; it does not confirm that today’s Minecraft for Android can run on a particular Xperia PLAY handset.
What was Minecraft on Xperia PLAY?
It was the first release of Minecraft: Pocket Edition, identified as Alpha 0.1. Mojang’s launch description presented it as a mobile version focused on creative play, adapted for the Xperia PLAY’s screen and controls. The launch announcement was reproduced in the Minecraft Forum archive; contemporary coverage also documented the release in WIRED and Engadget.
The Xperia PLAY was an Android smartphone built around dedicated gaming controls. Sony described it as the first PlayStation Certified smartphone, with shoulder buttons and PlayStation-symbol action buttons in a slide-out gamepad. Those physical controls distinguished the phone from a typical touchscreen Android device at the time. PlayStation’s April 2011 announcement introduced the device.
What did Alpha 0.1 include?
The first release emphasized building rather than the survival systems associated with desktop Minecraft. Mojang’s launch description listed randomized worlds, 36 block types, world saving, and multiplayer over a local wireless network. Players could select blocks on the touchscreen or scroll through them with the Xperia PLAY’s circle and square buttons.

Contemporary reporting noted that this early mobile release did not have desktop Minecraft’s nightly monster raids. That comparison applies to the 2011 Alpha 0.1 release, not to current Minecraft editions. The original launch announcement listed a US price of $6.99 in 2011; it is a historical launch price, not a current price or an indication of what a used handset includes.
Was it exclusive to Xperia PLAY?
At launch, yes—but only for a limited time. On May 25, 2011, TouchArcade reported that Mojang had confirmed the Android game would arrive first as an Xperia PLAY exclusive. The August launch coverage described the initial availability on that device. This was a launch-period arrangement, not a claim that Pocket Edition remained exclusive permanently.

Can you play Minecraft on Xperia PLAY today?
The historical release is documented, but the available compatibility information does not establish that the current Minecraft Android app runs on Xperia PLAY. Minecraft Help’s Android requirements page, accessed October 8, 2026, sets a current baseline of Android OS 9, more than 1 GB of RAM, at least 1 GB of storage, and OpenGL ES 3.1 or higher. Those requirements do not identify the operating system or graphics capabilities of an individual Xperia PLAY, nor verify installation or multiplayer access for that handset.
Minecraft Help also explains that devices below a discontinued OS baseline stop receiving current updates and may lose current multiplayer access. A phone’s ability to run a version released in 2011 should therefore not be confused with compatibility with the current Android app. The sources available here do not confirm whether a particular Xperia PLAY can install or access the original release now.
