If an imported custom skin in Minecraft Bedrock resets to Steve or Alex after you restart the game, it matches a confirmed bug reported since Bedrock version 26.40. The issue is still unresolved in the official tracker; although 26.60.24 Preview is listed as a fix version, that does not confirm a completed fix or when one will reach players. Keep a copy of your skin’s PNG outside Minecraft and re-import it if needed, but treat that as recovery—not a permanent workaround.
What is causing a custom skin to reset?
Mojira’s confirmed Bedrock report, MCPE-241720, is titled “Restarting the game causes custom skin to fail to load.” It describes imported skins failing after a game restart, after which the game displays a default skin and may show the notification “A local or platform skin could not be loaded.” The report says the game clears its local custom_skins folder on launch or restart, preventing the imported file reference from loading.
The report says the issue began with Bedrock 26.40. Its affected-version list includes 26.42 Hotfix and 26.50, as well as previews 26.50.25 and 26.60.23. The tracker was updated October 7, 2026, and remains unresolved. It lists 26.60.24 Preview as a fix version, but comments dated October 1 and October 6 report that the problem persisted. A listed fix version is not, by itself, confirmation that a fix is released or working for everyone.
On August 13, 2026, the Mojang Triage Team commented on MCPE-241720: “If a fix is implemented, it will be listed in our official changelogs.” Check the changelog for your platform and version before treating the problem as fixed.

First identify which skin problem you have
“My Minecraft skin keeps disappearing” can describe different symptoms. Before changing settings, note your edition, installed version, platform, and when the skin changes. The confirmed report concerns an imported Bedrock skin after restarting; it does not establish that every return to Steve or Alex has the same cause.
- Edition: Is the game Minecraft: Bedrock Edition or Minecraft: Java Edition?
- Skin type: Did you import a PNG, choose a skin in Character Creator or Dressing Room, or select Marketplace content?
- Timing: Does the reset happen after a full restart, immediately after selecting the skin, or only when other players see you in multiplayer?
- Version: What exact game version and platform are installed, and does that version appear in MCPE-241720’s affected-version list?
A multiplayer-only display problem is not the same symptom as a local skin file being cleared on restart. Likewise, the current confirmed report is specific to Bedrock and should not be used to diagnose a Java skin issue.

What to do if an imported Bedrock skin resets
- Keep the original PNG outside Minecraft’s managed files. Save a copy somewhere you can find it even if the game’s
custom_skinsfolder is cleared. - If the imported skin disappears, import it again from that saved copy. This is a cautious recovery step based on the behavior described in MCPE-241720, not a verified permanent fix.
- Check the official changelog for your platform and version. The tracker directs players to official changelogs for confirmation of a fix.
The available evidence does not establish that clearing cache, reinstalling the game, changing accounts or internet providers, or replacing hardware fixes this issue. Buying a Marketplace skin is also not a demonstrated remedy for an imported-skin reset.
Java and Bedrock use different skin workflows
Minecraft: Java Edition
Mojang’s documented Java workflow uses a flat PNG imported through the Minecraft Launcher. Open Minecraft: Java Edition, select the Skins tab, create or import the skin, choose the Classic/Wide or Slim model that matches the file, then save and use it. If your Java skin is changing unexpectedly, confirm that you are following the Java workflow rather than Bedrock instructions; MCPE-241720 does not establish a cause for Java resets.

Minecraft: Bedrock Edition
Mojang’s guide describes changing appearance through Dressing Room, including Character and Classic Skin choices. Marketplace skins are another digital option. Those are separate from importing a custom PNG, which is the skin type covered by MCPE-241720. Steve and Alex are the classic wide and slim models: Mojang’s “What is a Minecraft Skin?” guide, published June 5, 2023, says, “Steve’s arms are also four pixels wide, while Alex’s arms are three pixels wide.” The model choice affects the character’s shape; it does not explain why an imported skin resets.

Use the game’s official changelog for the platform and version you play. The MCPE-241720 tracker remains open despite listing 26.60.24 Preview as a fix version, and reports on October 1 and October 6 said the problem was still present. Those facts do not support a promise that a fix is coming soon or that a particular release resolves the issue for all players.

Other reports should be interpreted cautiously. MCPE-240784 describes an Android user’s reset on version 1.21.26.33, but it is unconfirmed and marked as a duplicate, so it is not independent confirmation of the same cause. Java issue MC-242853 concerned a different historical symptom on version 1.17.1 and was marked duplicate of MC-101579; it should not be conflated with the current Bedrock report.
