There is no verified public ranking here of the indie games that sold the most copies on Steam in 2024. Why Steam’s “top sellers” are not a most-sold list
Valve’s official Best of Steam 2024 page measures its annual top games by gross revenue. Revenue is not the same as copies sold: a game’s price, discounts, refunds, and other sales conditions affect how much revenue its copies generate. Valve groups games into revenue tiers rather than publishing a precise rank or unit count, so those tiers cannot establish which indie games sold the most copies.
That distinction matters even when a game appears among Steam’s top sellers. The label describes performance under Valve’s stated revenue measure; it does not certify a position in a copies-sold ranking. Nor does the chart by itself identify which listed games count as indie.
What the 2024 launch-revenue figure measures
Valve’s year-in-review also treats new releases as a separate category. Its new-release revenue measure covers gross revenue during a game’s first 30 days after release and includes pre-purchase revenue. That launch window is not a calendar-year measure, and it is still revenue rather than units sold. It should not be used as a substitute for an annual indie sales ranking.

What third-party unit-sales analysis can—and cannot—tell us
VG Insights’ 2024 global indie market report includes a chart titled “Top Indie Game Launches of 2024, by Units Sold on Steam.” This is the relevant kind of analysis for a question about copies sold, but it is a third-party analysis, not Valve’s official annual chart. Its surfaced material does not provide the chart’s title-level values or enough methodology to reproduce a ranked list. The report’s “launches” framing also differs from a list of all indie games sold on Steam during the full 2024 calendar year.
VG Insights and Alinea Analytics publish market analyses that may help readers understand indie sales, but estimates should be attributed to the publisher and interpreted according to its definitions and methodology. The available material does not establish a verified indie-specific unit total or a complete list with exact ranks, so naming winners or attaching copy counts would overstate what it supports.

What a reliable “most-sold” ranking would need
A defensible answer should specify the population, time period, metric, and evidence behind the ranking. For this topic, the key distinctions are:
- Metric: copies or units sold, not gross revenue.
- Time window: all sales during calendar year 2024, or launches in 2024; those are different populations.
- Population: what qualifies as “indie,” and whether the list includes every qualifying Steam game or only new releases.
- Evidence: Valve’s official revenue chart versus an attributed third-party unit-sales estimate.
- Precision: exact ranks and unit totals versus broad revenue tiers or an unranked selection.
Unless a source supplies those details, Valve’s 2024 chart can support a revenue-based discussion, while a unit-sales list remains unverified. The clearest way to answer the headline question is therefore to distinguish the two metrics rather than relabel Valve’s revenue tiers as copies sold.
