Mortal Kombat: Flawless Victory: A Visual History of the Iconic Series is an officially listed art book, but reports have questioned the appearance of some portraits from the series’ early games. Those reports describe the images as apparently AI-upscaled; they do not establish that AI was used. No primary confirmation of the processing method is cited in the reporting available here.

Insight Editions and Simon & Schuster market the book as a visual history spanning artwork and production material. The publisher advertises interviews with the NetherRealm development team, concept sketches, renders, illustrations, character and environment material, and information about making the games. These are descriptions of the publisher’s intended contents, not an independent assessment of how complete the book’s archive is. The publisher’s description calls the series “the visual history of the iconic, over-the-top fighting game that was first introduced to the world in 1992.” Insight Editions’ product page lists the hardcover at $60 and says it ships to the United States and Canada; price and shipping terms may change.
What are the AI-upscaling allegations?
Reports published October 23 and 24, 2025, drew attention to portraits from the first two Mortal Kombat games. They described apparent visual defects, including masks seeming to blend into faces and eyes that look distorted or melted, and characterized the images as possibly AI-upscaled. Time Extension’s October 24 report recounts reactions to the images. 80 Level’s October 23 report refers to circulated photographs of pages 35, 55, and 61.

Those descriptions are reports and interpretations of the images, not proof of the tool or process used. The articles said Insight Editions had not directly addressed the issue as of their publication. The reporting cited here does not establish whether the publisher or rights holder later commented, confirmed a method, issued a correction, or changed a printing. Accordingly, “AI-upscaled” remains an allegation—not a verified description of the book’s production.

Separate two questions: the book’s existence and contents as officially presented are documented by its publisher and distributor; the specific image-processing claim remains unconfirmed in the reporting cited here. If the appearance of archival game art is central to your decision, inspect available pages or a copy before buying, and look for any direct statement from Insight Editions or the rights holder about the images and any corrected printing. Do not treat the reported examples as proof that every image in the book was processed the same way.
