But “most iconic” is a judgment, not a global popularity ranking: different melodies endure because they connect a game’s sound to its world, action, or a player’s memories.
Why the Super Mario Bros. Ground Theme stands out
The “Ground Theme” is the main musical theme of the 1985 Super Mario Bros., composed by Koji Kondo. In 2023, it became the first video-game sound or song added to the Library of Congress National Recording Registry. The Library calls it arguably one of the most recognizable game themes of all time—a significant institutional distinction, though not the result of a public recognition poll. Library of Congress

Its sound is closely tied to the hardware it was written for. The Library describes Kondo composing around four Famicom/NES sound-chip channels: two pulse-wave channels, one triangle-wave channel and one noise channel. Those constraints helped shape a compact, distinctive musical identity rather than a conventional orchestral score. The music also serves the play experience: the Library says the score gives the game world a sonic image and helps establish the rhythm and tempo of interaction.
The contrast between the bright “Ground Theme” and the darker “Underworld Theme” shows how a small set of musical ideas can signal a change in place and mood. The themes are memorable not only as melodies heard outside the game, but as cues attached to what the player sees and does.

Other themes with a strong claim to iconic status
These examples are a starting point, not a ranked list. Each illustrates a different way game music can lodge in memory.
| Game or series | What makes its music distinctive | What the available sources establish |
|---|---|---|
| The Legend of Zelda | Memorable series music with an identity that has been reinterpreted in orchestral performance. | The Library of Congress identifies Kondo’s Zelda scores among game themes later reimagined in orchestral performance. Nintendo’s creator interview also shows that people involved with Mario have varied views on what defines a series’ musical essence; it does not establish a single audience consensus for Zelda. Library of Congress Nintendo UK |
| Space Invaders | A simple, repeating four-note background pattern that accelerates as the invaders descend, making the music track the action. | The Library of Congress recounts that many game historians cite it as the first continuous background soundtrack; that “first” claim is commonly attributed, not presented as uncontested. Library of Congress |
| The Secret of Monkey Island | A catchy, cinematic theme whose scale gives a quirky adventure a sense of gravitas without making it self-serious. | Journey composer Austin Wintory recalled Michael Land’s theme as an early game-music memory: “Probably my earliest game music memory, aside from Mario on NES, was hearing Michael Land’s theme to The Secret of Monkey Island in 1990.” This is one composer’s recollection, not a survey of listeners. BAFTA |
| Commando, International Karate and The Last V8 | Rob Hubbard’s Commodore 64 scores helped keep players engaged and build atmosphere. | Composer Jesper Kyd described their effect on him: “The first time I really noticed video game music and the effect it could have on game play was probably Commando, International Karate and The Last V8.” BAFTA |
| Phantasy Star | A catchy, vibrant soundtrack that helped give the game character. | Cuphead composer Kris Maddigan recalled Tokuhiko Uwabo’s music in those terms. That testimony records an individual creative influence, not a wider ranking. BAFTA |
What makes a video game theme iconic?
A useful way to weigh candidates is to look at several dimensions together, rather than treating “iconic” as a single measurable quality.

- Immediate recognition: Can a short phrase or sound point listeners toward a particular game or series? Recognition is hard to compare across generations and audiences without a representative poll.
- Identity: Does the music feel inseparable from the game it represents, rather than simply being a memorable tune?
- Connection to play: Does it reinforce a setting, convey a change in mood, or respond to what is happening? The accelerating Space Invaders pattern is a clear example of music linked to gameplay action.
- Longevity and reinterpretation: Has the music remained part of the series’ identity or been carried into later performances? The Library of Congress notes orchestral reimaginings of Kondo’s Zelda scores.
- Personal memory: Does a theme recall a first playthrough, a particular machine, or a period of someone’s life? BAFTA’s composers remember different formative themes, showing why no single list can stand for everyone.
Why there is no definitive number one
The available sources do not supply a representative, cross-game poll measuring recognition. The Library of Congress milestone is strong evidence of preservation and institutional significance, not proof that Mario won a popular vote or that every player recognizes it first. Creator interviews and composer recollections add valuable context about intent and influence, but they describe particular people’s views.
Nintendo’s interview captures the distinction between a celebrated theme and a settled definition of a series’ sound. Kondo reflected: “Thinking back to the way I composed the music back then, I think saying that ‘Mario’s music should sound cool’ is the most apposite way to describe what these pieces are aiming for.” Even within a defining series, musical identity can be understood in more than one way.
So if the question is which theme has the clearest documented combination of recognition, musical design, gameplay context and official recognition, the Super Mario Bros. “Ground Theme” is the strongest answer here. If “most iconic” means the tune most firmly attached to a particular player’s memories, the answer can just as reasonably be Zelda, Space Invaders, Monkey Island or another game that marked a formative moment.
