Mount Fay is a mountain in Banff National Park’s Valley of the Ten Peaks. Visitors can see it from the Moraine Lake Lakeshore Trail; reaching its summit is a separate mountaineering undertaking, not an extension of the easy lakeside walk.

Where is Mount Fay?

Mount Fay stands in the Valley of the Ten Peaks in Banff National Park, Alberta. The mountain and the nearby Fay Glacier are visible from Moraine Lake’s shore, making the lake the most straightforward place for visitors to see them.

Can you see Mount Fay from Moraine Lake?

Yes. Parks Canada lists Mount Fay and the Fay Glacier among the views from the Moraine Lake Lakeshore Trail, an easy walk along the water. This trail is for viewing the landscape; it does not climb Mount Fay or lead to its summit.

Getting to Moraine Lake

Moraine Lake Road is closed to personal vehicles year-round. During the operating season, Parks Canada identifies shuttle services, Roam public transit, and commercial transportation operators as access options. Dates, schedules, and booking details can change, so consult the official Moraine Lake access information before planning your trip.

Is Mount Fay a hike or a climb?

Seeing Mount Fay is a simple lakeshore outing; summiting it is a technical alpine climb. The Alpine Club of Canada describes demanding approaches in the area, including a technical route from Moraine Lake and a longer, more circuitous approach via Tokumm Creek and the Fay Hut area.

The club warns that the Tokumm Creek trail from Marble Canyon to the former Fay Hut location is no longer maintained by Parks Canada. Its approach information also describes difficult terrain and hazards. These descriptions provide context, not a current trail or route-condition report. A summit attempt requires appropriate mountaineering skills, preparation, and up-to-date local conditions information.

What published climbing reports show

Historical reports illustrate the mountain’s technical character, but they should not be read as recommendations for beginners or as evidence of present conditions. The Alpine Club of Canada’s 1981 Canadian Alpine Journal documents a winter ascent of the Chouinard Route in March 1979 and recounts an earlier approach attempt that encountered unstable snow.

A separate American Alpine Club report describes The Sound of Silence on Mount Fay’s east face as 1,100 m, M8, WI5. Those figures apply to that specific route report; they are not general statistics for the mountain. Neither account establishes current snow, glacier, or rock conditions.

Who first climbed Mount Fay?

The American Alpine Club’s 1943 account credits Christian Kaufmann and Gertrude Benham with the first ascent in summer 1904, followed shortly afterward by a second ascent by Professor Fay. The account also describes historical confusion involving the names Mount Bident and Mount Fay.
