Xenoblade Chronicles X: Definitive Edition launched for Nintendo Switch on March 20, 2025, bringing the Wii U sci-fi RPG to a new platform with enhanced visuals and added story elements. Nintendo has also released a separate Nintendo Switch 2 Edition, with upgraded display and frame-rate capabilities that require Switch 2 hardware.
What is Xenoblade Chronicles X: Definitive Edition?
It is the enhanced Switch version of Xenoblade Chronicles X, first released for Wii U in 2015. Nintendo’s October 29, 2024 announcement describes the Definitive Edition as adding enhanced visuals and story elements; a January 10, 2025 trailer announcement also identified new characters and a new Skell to unlock. Nintendo’s announcement and additional-trailer announcement provide those edition details.
The story starts in 2054, after an intergalactic war forces humans to flee Earth. The player is among the survivors who crash-land on Mira and work with BLADE from the New Los Angeles colony to help humanity endure. Nintendo describes the game as a standalone sci-fi story, so prior Xenoblade games are not required to understand its premise.
Exploration, combat and Skells
Mira is an open world spanning five continents. Players customize their character and class, take on missions and affinity quests, and use Skells—customizable mechs—for both exploration and combat. The combination of a large alien setting, character progression and mech traversal is central to the game’s identity, rather than a side feature of its story.

Online features
Nintendo describes online squads of up to 32 players, group missions for up to four, and the ability to recruit other players’ avatars for the main story. Online play requires a Nintendo Switch Online membership, a Nintendo Account and internet access; Nintendo’s US listing labels online play as 1–32 players. Which version should you choose?
The original Switch release and the Switch 2 Edition are distinct purchase choices. The Switch 2 Edition includes the Switch game, while owners of the Switch Definitive Edition can instead buy a separate digital upgrade pack. Switch 2-only display and performance features do not apply when playing on the original Switch.

Nintendo’s US announcement dated February 19, 2026 listed the Switch 2 Edition at $64.99 and the upgrade pack at $4.99; prices may change, so check the live store for current pricing. The same announcement said a physical Switch 2 Edition would be available at select retailers and Nintendo’s My Nintendo Store starting April 16, 2026. Current stock is not established here.
