The Midnight Walk is the game behind the “cozy horror” and Tim Burton-style comparison: a dark-fantasy adventure built from scanned clay models, with a lantern creature named Potboy helping you find your way through danger. The Burton reference describes the game’s visual feel, not an official connection to the filmmaker.

What is The Midnight Walk?

Developed by MoonHood and published by Fast Travel Games, The Midnight Walk casts you as the Burnt One, who befriends Potboy, a lost creature carrying a flame. The official description frames the adventure as five tales of fire and darkness set in a handcrafted fantasy world. MoonHood and Fast Travel Games’ official game page describes the journey and its central characters.

Potboy’s flame is more than a visual guide: it lights the way and can distract monsters, giving you an opportunity to hide or evade them. That combination of exploration and threat helps explain why PlayStation Blog described the setting as a “cozy horror” world. It is the blog’s characterization, rather than a formal genre label.

Why does it bring Tim Burton to mind?

The strongest basis for the comparison is the handcrafted, uncanny look. MoonHood says every asset was first sculpted in clay, then 3D-scanned into the game and animated in a stop-motion style. The tactile shapes and deliberately animated movement give the fantasy world an unusual, storybook quality that can evoke Burton’s visual sensibility.

Where can you play it?

The original release arrived on May 8, 2025, for PS5 and PC through Steam. The game supports standard screen play as well as virtual reality, with PS VR2 support on PlayStation and VR support on PC. MoonHood’s launch announcement confirms the launch platforms and VR support; the Steam listing describes gamepad and VR play.

Nintendo’s Australia store also lists a Switch 2 version. That listing confirms the platform, but the information available there does not establish its release date. Store availability, prices, and features can differ by region.

Which version should you choose?

  • PS5: A fit if you want to play on a standard screen or use PS VR2; PlayStation describes both modes.
  • Steam: A PC option with gamepad and VR play listed on the store page.
  • Switch 2: Listed by Nintendo Australia; check your regional store for current availability and details.

For a non-VR playthrough, PS5 or Steam will work without a headset. Choose VR only if you already have compatible equipment and want that presentation; the game does not require it. Current prices are not established here, so check your local storefront before buying.

What to expect from its horror

The available descriptions point to an adventure that balances eerie imagery and monster encounters with guidance from Potboy’s light. His flame helps with navigation and can create chances to hide or escape, but it does not make the world safe. The “cozy” description is best read as a tonal contrast—an inviting, crafted fantasy setting wrapped around dark subject matter—not as a promise that the game has no threatening moments.
