No. You can take more photos on later trips and keep multiple images. The one-photo limit applies when you finish a course: you select one photo of each Pokémon species you captured for Professor Mirror to evaluate.

What does “one photo per Pokémon” mean?

At the end of a course, you choose one photo of each species you photographed during that run. Professor Mirror evaluates those selected pictures. The Pokémon Company International’s official guide describes this as choosing one photo of each species captured.

That is a limit on the photos submitted for that course’s evaluation—not a limit on how many pictures you can take of a Pokémon across the game. You can replay courses and take new shots on later runs.

How the score, stars, and Photodex differ

Game feature What it measures or stores
Course evaluation score Professor Mirror scores the selected photo using factors that include the Pokémon’s pose, size, direction, and placement, as well as other Pokémon and the background. The official guide identifies these as contributing factors.
Star category A one-to-four-star rating based on the Pokémon’s behavior in the photo. The guide says this rating is separate from the factors used for the numerical score.
Photodex A Pokémon’s Photodex page can register one photo for each star category. The official Photodex feature explains why documenting different behaviors can take multiple expeditions.
Personal album A place for your photos that is separate from the Photodex; album photos can be edited. See the official photo editing and sharing feature.

Which photo should you submit?

Choose based on what you want from that run. For a stronger numerical score, look for an expressive pose, a clear view of the Pokémon at a suitable size in the frame, and effective placement. Other Pokémon and the background also contribute to the evaluation.

New Pokemon Snap (Nintendo Switch) (European Version)
  • New Pokémon Snap is coming!
  • Get ready for New Pokémon Snap, an all-new adventure for Nintendo Switch that's inspired by the classic Nintendo 64 game, Pokémon Snap.
  • Photograph lively wild Pokémon in their natural habitats as you research and explore unknown islands. Hop in your trusty travel pod, the NEO-ONE, and journey through a variety of environments such as beaches, jungles, and deserts to capture previously-unseen Pokémon behaviors. You can even toss Pokémon a delicious fluffruit to catch their attention. Photos you take can also be used to fill out your very own Pokémon Photodex!
  • In the Lental region, Pokémon and vegetation have sometimes been seen to glow. Meet Professor Mirror and work with him to uncover the mystery of the Illumina Phenomenon. Your photos and observations may be key to learning about this strange occurrence.

If you are filling out the Photodex, focus instead on whether the shot captures a star category you still need. A striking composition and a photo of unusual behavior are not necessarily the same thing, because the numerical score and star category assess different aspects of the image.

What if none of your photos is the one you want?

Submit your best available choice for that course, then replay it for another chance. The official guide notes that courses can be replayed to take better photos, and the Photodex guide describes repeated expeditions as part of documenting a Pokémon’s different behaviors.
