A reliable hunt flow is to build gauge in axe mode, activate Power Axe when there’s time, switch to sword to reach Amped State, then choose a finisher only when the opening supports its commitment. Watch the Switch Gauge divider, too: below the sword-morph threshold, a morph attempt reloads instead.
How the Switch Axe gauges and modes work
Switch Gauge: manage access to sword mode
Axe attacks fill the Switch Gauge; sword attacks consume it. The divider on the gauge marks the amount needed to morph into sword mode. If the gauge falls below that mark, attempting to morph reloads rather than switching modes. Build gauge with axe attacks and plan a return to axe before you run short.

Amp Gauge: build toward Amped State
Sword attacks build the separate Amp Gauge. When it is full, Amped State activates the weapon’s phial effect on most sword attacks and unlocks Amped finishers. It is a sword-power state, not a replacement for managing the Switch Gauge.
Power Axe: strengthen the gauge-building phase
Wild Swing followed by Heavy Slam activates Power Axe. The current Red Gauge Switch Axe guide says Power Axe strengthens axe attacks and speeds Switch Gauge building. It can make the axe phase more productive, but it takes time; use the sequence when the monster gives you room rather than forcing it into a brief opening.

A practical Switch Axe hunt flow
- Start in axe mode. Use basic axe attacks to build Switch Gauge and stay mobile while looking for an opening.
- Activate Power Axe when safe. Use Wild Swing into Heavy Slam if you have enough time to complete the sequence.
- Morph to sword with gauge in reserve. Don’t wait until the Switch Gauge is at the divider; sword attacks will spend it.
- Build Amp Gauge with sword attacks. Continue attacking until Amped State activates, while monitoring the Switch Gauge.
- Match your commitment to the opening. Use ordinary sword attacks or a morphing attack to reposition during a short opening. Consider Full Release Slash only when the monster is likely to remain in range for its windup and multi-hit sequence.
- Choose whether an attachment is worth the exposure. Zero Sum Discharge attaches to the monster, but attachment does not make you safe from incoming damage. Release early if staying attached is too dangerous, understanding that an early release weakens the explosion.
- Return to axe before gauge runs too low. When Switch Gauge approaches the sword-morph divider, transition deliberately instead of risking a reload.
Which move fits the opening?
| Situation | Option | What to weigh |
|---|---|---|
| The monster is giving you a long, stable opening. | Full Release Slash | It has a windup and a multi-hit sequence, and returns you to axe mode when it finishes. Commit only if the monster is likely to stay in reach for the sequence. |
| You want to attach to the monster for an attack sequence. | Zero Sum Discharge | It trades mobility for attachment. You can still take incoming damage; releasing early reduces the explosion’s strength. |
| The monster uses an attack you can read and time. | Axe Offset Rising Slash or Sword Counter Rising Slash | These are timing-dependent answers, not general-purpose guards. Use them only when the move and timing are suitable. |
| You cannot confidently time a counter or offset. | Hop, roll, or morph out of the attack’s path | Choose movement over a counter attempt when the timing is unreliable. |
| The opening is short or the monster is moving out of reach. | Ordinary attacks or a morphing attack to reposition | Avoid starting a long finisher that may not connect through its full sequence. |
Use counters and offsets as timing tools, not shields
Axe Offset Rising Slash is an answer to an eligible attack when you can meet its timing; a successful offset can lead into Heavy Slam or a morph. Sword Counter Rising Slash is also a timed counter. Neither move should be treated as a universal guard or a safe substitute for evasion. If you are unsure you can meet the timing, hop, roll, or morph away from the attack instead.
Choose a phial for the weapon and target
Switch Axe phials are fixed to the weapon, not interchangeable attachments. Power phials support raw damage, Power Element phials support an elemental plan that matches the target, and status phials build their named status. Choose a weapon whose phial suits the target and the plan you intend to use; Amped State activates that phial effect on most sword attacks.
