New World: Aeternum’s final content update arrived in October 2025, the same day Amazon announced major company-wide layoffs. Amazon Games said continued content support was no longer sustainable, but did not say the layoffs caused that decision. The game is still playable for now: Amazon’s latest announcement says servers will close on January 31, 2027.
What Amazon announced about New World
On October 28, 2025, Amazon Games said Season 10: Nighthaven would be the final content release for New World: Aeternum on PC and consoles. The company said: “After four years of steady content updates and a major new console release, we’ve reached a point where it is no longer sustainable to continue supporting the game with new content updates.” The announcement framed this as an end to new content, not an immediate end to the game. How the announcement relates to Amazon’s layoffs
The timing connected the game news to a broader change at Amazon, but the available statements do not establish that layoffs caused the end of New World content development. On October 28, 2025, Amazon announced 14,000 job cuts company-wide, according to PC Gamer’s report. That figure is not an Amazon Games layoff count; the report said the number of game-division employees affected was not disclosed.
In the same report, Amazon vice president Steve Boom said the company was halting a significant amount of first-party AAA development, “specifically around MMOs,” and making significant role reductions in studios in Irvine and San Diego and its central publishing team. This supports a broader strategic shift away from MMO development, but Amazon Games’ New World announcement gave a sustainability rationale rather than explicitly linking the game’s content decision to the job cuts.

Amazon’s January 15, 2026 update replaced the October announcement’s expectation that servers would remain available through 2026 with a specific shutdown date. The game was delisted on January 15, 2026, and Amazon says it will be taken offline across all platforms on January 31, 2027. These are separate milestones:
