What did Johanna Faries say?
In a GamesBeat interview published December 11, 2023, Faries credited the development team and said: “It’s something where we measure that, and we can feel it. You can feel when it’s hitting and credit to everyone on the development side for Modern Warfare is Zombies mode is probably the best rated ‘third mode’ in a decade, and I’m not making that up.”

The wording matters: Faries said “probably,” and the statement is her assessment. The interview does not identify a critic or player rating, an internal metric, or any other specific meaning for “best rated.”
What was she describing?
Faries was discussing the Zombies experience in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III, which launched with a new open-world format. She described it as a “completely new open world expansive way to play Zombies” and said its gameplay architecture differed from the franchise’s familiar approach. She characterized choosing that direction as a bet.

In the same conversation, Faries added, “And sometimes you can’t always measure it.” Her remarks place the claim in a discussion of both measurable results and qualitative judgment; they do not disclose which kind of evidence supports the decade comparison. The GamesBeat page was updated June 18, 2025.
Can the decade-long ranking be verified?
Not from the interview. It supplies no rating provider, score, set of eligible “third modes,” geography, platform list, cutoff date or formula. Without those details, a reader cannot reproduce the comparison or determine whether it refers to critics, players, publisher data or another measure.

Insider Gaming also attributed the statement to Faries’s interview in a December 15, 2023 article. Its discussion of criticism and reactions is the outlet’s reporting, not a measured consensus statistic. That corroborates the attribution, but it does not establish the rating methodology.

In this context, “third mode” refers to a game mode alongside Call of Duty’s other major offerings, rather than to a named rating category with a defined set of contenders. The interview discusses Zombies as a distinct mode and its different design; it does not define which other games or modes count in the decade comparison.
