The original pale wolf remains, bringing the full set to nine variants. Java Edition 1.20.5 release notes · Bedrock 1.20.80 changelog
When did Armored Paws arrive?
The armadillo and wolf features are part of the final releases, not just experimental or preview content. They shipped on April 23, 2024: Java players received them in version 1.20.5, while Bedrock players received them in version 1.20.80. Mojang had discussed testing the features earlier, but these are the release versions to use when looking for them in the game. Where do armadillos spawn, and how do you get scutes?
Armadillos spawn in Savannas and Badlands. They are tempted by Spider Eyes, and two adult armadillos fed Spider Eyes can breed. Armadillos drop scutes periodically, or when brushed, giving players a renewable way to gather the material used for wolf armor. Java Edition notes · Bedrock changelog
Bedrock’s changelog adds a defensive behavior: a threatened armadillo rolls up and unrolls after four seconds without detecting a threat. That detail is specifically stated in the Bedrock notes; the Java notes describe the biomes, scute drops, and Spider Eye behavior.

How does wolf armor work?
Wolf armor is crafted from armadillo scutes. It protects a wolf from most damage sources while it has durability remaining; it is not permanent or universal protection. The armor shows increasing signs of breakage as it wears down, and protection ends when its durability is depleted. Mojang’s Java notes say it can be dyed similarly to leather armor. Equip, repair, dye, or remove it
- You need a tamed adult wolf to equip the armor.
- Only the wolf’s owner can equip, repair, or shear the armor off.
- Use armadillo scutes to repair the armor, including while it is equipped.
- Use shears to remove the armor; shearing returns it.
- Dye the armor in a similar fashion to leather armor.
What are the nine wolf variants and where do they spawn?
Armored Paws added eight variants to the original pale wolf. The release notes associate each natural-spawn variant with a biome, and give pack sizes for several of the additions. These details describe natural spawns; Bedrock’s notes separately describe broader biome families used for variant selection with summons and spawn eggs.

The biome and pack-size details come from the Java 1.20.5 and Bedrock 1.20.80 release notes. In Bedrock, summon and spawn-egg variant selection has its own biome-family rules, so the natural-spawn table should not be treated as a complete guide to command-created wolves. Java 1.20.5 also decreased the default spawn-chunk radius by 98%, according to Mojang’s release announcement. That is a separate technical change in the same update, not a statistic about armadillos, wolves, or wolf armor. Java Edition 1.20.5 release notes
