There is no evidence-backed universal “best” Gunlance build here: the right setup depends on whether you want mobility, defensive reloads, shell capacity, or more frequent access to the Wyrmstake. In Monster Hunter Rise: Sunbreak, switch skills change those trade-offs substantially. This guide explains the weapon’s core actions and how to choose skills without presenting unverified armor sets or weapon rankings as fact.
How the Gunlance works
The Gunlance combines thrusting attacks with shells, a guard, and high-impact actions such as Wyvern’s Fire. Capcom’s official Sunbreak manual for Nintendo Switch lists its basic control vocabulary: lateral thrust, shelling, charged shelling, rising slash, guard thrust, reload, Wyvern’s Fire, and guard. The manual notes that the in-game Hunter’s Notes provide more detail on controls and recommended combos.

Choose Sunbreak switch skills around your priorities
Sunbreak’s switch skills alter movement, reload behavior, damage windows, and Wirebug use. The effects below are described in Kiranico’s Sunbreak switch-skill reference; the playstyle recommendations are decision guidance, not a tested ranking.

#1 Best Overall
- The debut of the new “wirebug” mechanic allows for wire-based grappling actions that can be used to scale cliffs and other hard-to-reach areas, providing new traversal and aerial attack options.
- The game will introduce magnamalo, a menacing new flagship monster, as well as other new monsters like the shape-shifting aknosom, the amphibious tetranadon, and more.
- New hunting partners called palamutes can be personalized and used to ride across the terrain, providing players with all-new traveling and attack options.
- In addition to the plethora of solo and multiplayer quests, the immersive story mode will task aspiring hunters with discovering the secrets behind the puzzling “rampage” events that threaten kamura village.
- Play solo, or join up to three other hunters in local or online co-op play. The Nintendo Switch system also allows for hunting anywhere, anytime and with anyone!
| Skill or choice | Documented effect | Useful when you prioritize |
|---|---|---|
| Blast Dash | Uses recoil to launch the hunter toward a target. | Closing distance and staying mobile. |
| Ground Splitter | Temporarily boosts shell, Wyrmstake Shot, and Wyvern’s Fire damage. | Creating a damage window for those attacks. |
| Hail Cutter | Performs an aerial reload and reduces Wyvern’s Fire cooldown. | Using Wyvern’s Fire more often. |
| Quick Reload | Restores shells to maximum capacity but does not reload the Wyrmstake. | Refilling shells quickly and preserving a faster combo rhythm. |
| Guard Reload | Reloads while guarding and restores shells plus the Wyrmstake, but loads fewer rounds at once. | Maintaining defense and restoring Wyrmstake access, while accepting a smaller reload. |
| Bullet Barrage | Uses a Wirebug to rush in and unleash attacks; automatically reloads shells, Wyrmstake Cannon, and Wyvern’s Fire first. | Combining an approach with a full offensive release. |
| Reverse Blast | A Wirebug-powered evasive maneuver; performs a quick reload if no shells are loaded. | Evading while repositioning, with a reload benefit when empty. |
Quick Reload or Guard Reload?
Quick Reload is the capacity-focused option: it refills shells to their maximum, but leaves the Wyrmstake unloaded. Guard Reload trades a smaller shell refill for guarding during the action and restoring both shells and the Wyrmstake. Choose based on the capacity you need, whether your combos rely on Wyrmstake access, and how much you value protection during a reload.

Build decisions should follow the weapon and switch skills you actually use, rather than a generic “best” label. The available build reference concerns Lance, not Gunlance, so it does not establish Gunlance armor pieces, decorations, weapon rankings, progression sets, or damage comparisons. Its patch 16.0 label is not evidence for a Gunlance recommendation.

Practical tips for improving
- Use the Hunter’s Notes for your platform’s controls and recommended combos instead of assuming Switch button inputs apply everywhere.
- If distance is your main problem, consider Blast Dash for its recoil-driven approach or Reverse Blast for evasive repositioning.
- If you want a guarded reload that restores the Wyrmstake, consider Guard Reload; if shell capacity and a full refill matter more, consider Quick Reload.
- Use Ground Splitter when you can capitalize on its temporary boosts to shell, Wyrmstake Shot, and Wyvern’s Fire damage.
- Consider Hail Cutter if reducing Wyvern’s Fire cooldown is central to your approach, or Bullet Barrage when you want a Wirebug-powered rush and a multi-action release.
