There is no universally best controller preset for Monster Hunter Wilds. A practical starting point is to test Focus Mode on Toggle if holding the left trigger strains your hand or competes with another input, raise its horizontal and vertical sensitivity by one step, then adjust camera and Seikret options around your weapon and play style. Keep each change only if it solves a problem you notice in a hunt.
Start with Focus Mode
Focus Mode is central to aiming attacks and using wounds. PlayStation’s Monster Hunter Wilds starter guide says holding L2 activates the mode, allowing more precise attack aiming and revealing wounds that can be hit with Focus Strikes. Xbox Wire’s February 28, 2025 guide likewise describes Focus Mode as improving camera control while aiming and highlighting wounds.
Hold or Toggle?
Try Toggle if holding the left trigger is tiring or if you need that finger for another input. TechRadar recommends testing Toggle, particularly during sequences that involve several simultaneous inputs. The trade-off is that you must keep track of whether Focus Mode is active; Hold may suit you better if you often lose track of its state. This is a comfort and input-load choice, not a gameplay rule.
Set sensitivity by feel
TechRadar’s starting experiment is to raise both horizontal and vertical Focus Mode sensitivity by one increment, then test with the weapons you actually use. Faster camera movement may help track quick targets or aim with ranged weapons; slower movement can make fine adjustments easier. The source does not establish a single ideal sensitivity value, so make small changes and judge whether you can track and place attacks accurately.

Choose aiming and camera behavior
Reticle direction and target camera
These options influence how aiming relates to your view. Mobalytics’ settings guide explains that reticle direction determines whether Focus Mode and Slinger aiming follow the camera’s center or the hunter’s direction, and that the options also affect monster-camera locking. The guide lists four choices but does not identify a universally best numbered option. Try the alternatives in a safe area and choose the behavior that feels consistent when you aim, recenter and move around a monster.
Camera distance
A farther camera can show more of the surroundings, including monster attacks and nearby environmental features. Mobalytics describes camera distance as a visibility choice; move it back if you feel too zoomed in, or keep it closer if you prefer a tighter view.

- PS Remote Play requires Remote Play App connected to Wi-Fi, PS4 or PS5 console with the latest system software and compatible game. A PS4 or PS5 console with a wired connection via a LAN cable is recommended. Version 4.0 of the Remote Play App on iOS and iPadOS or version 4.1 on macOS is required for games to be playable with the controller over Bluetooth.
Make riding and navigation less awkward
Seikret manual controls
If the default Seikret acceleration and slowing inputs feel counterintuitive, test Type 2. TechRadar reports that this option matches hunter movement and found it more intuitive. Treat that as an editorial preference: keep the default if its mapping already feels natural to you.
Monster-sighting camera
Consider turning off the monster-sighting camera if its cinematic transition disrupts your control while riding into an encounter. This is TechRadar’s experience, not a universal finding, so try it during normal play before deciding.

Map zoom and item navigation
TechRadar recommends disabling map zoom for its reviewed adjustable-trigger setup because short trigger travel made the zoom jump between extremes. That recommendation may not apply to a standard controller or to different trigger settings. Mobalytics also recommends setting frequently used items in the radial menu and adjusting item-cursor speed if selecting items under pressure feels cumbersome.

Rear paddles can let you map evade or attacks while keeping your right thumb on the camera stick. TechRadar discusses the DualSense Edge as one example, but a paddle-equipped controller is optional; the available guidance does not establish that it is necessary or superior to other layouts.

A quick way to tune your setup
- Change one thing at a time. Start with Focus Mode Hold or Toggle, then decide whether the sensitivity needs adjustment.
- Test in a hunt with your usual weapon. Check whether you can enter Focus Mode comfortably, track the target and aim at wounds without fighting the controls.
- Adjust camera and riding options only when you notice a problem. Try reticle behavior, camera distance or Seikret Type 2 in response to a specific aiming or movement frustration.
- Keep the changes that help your inputs. Restore an option if it causes more missed inputs, awkward aiming or confusion than the original setting.
