Miles “Tails” Prower
Tails is a two-tailed fox and Sonic’s companion. SEGA describes him flying by spinning his tails and also highlights his mechanical skills. His ability to fly and his work as an inventor make him a distinctive partner to Sonic rather than another speed-focused hero. The Sonic Origins Plus manual describes him as a young fox who supports Sonic by flying with his tails.

Knuckles the Echidna
Knuckles protects the Master Emerald on Angel Island. SEGA’s character profile describes him as Sonic’s rival and fighting companion, a powerful martial artist, and a skilled treasure hunter. He can glide and climb, giving him a role and abilities distinct from Sonic’s roaming speed.
Amy Rose
Amy is an energetic, kind-hearted hedgehog associated with her Piko Piko Hammer. SEGA’s Sonic Advance page uses a specific relationship description for her; as a general guide, she is best introduced as a determined ally and friend. Shadow the Hedgehog
Shadow is one of Sonic’s most prominent rivals and features centrally in SEGA’s character material and Sonic x Shadow Generations merchandise descriptions. He is recognizable as a darker counterpart to Sonic, but his place in a historical poll should not be mistaken for a current popularity rank.
Dr. Eggman

Does a popularity poll show who is most popular?
SEGA Sonic Channel published a poll on June 23, 2006, after it ran from April 3 to June 1 that year. SEGA reported 5,273 voters choosing among 28 characters. In the first-choice favorite-character question, Sonic received 1,637 votes, Shadow 1,201, and Tails 424. Those numbers describe that specific poll and its voters; they are not a representative estimate of all Sonic audiences or a current worldwide ranking.
