To create a kingdom in Mount & Blade II: Bannerlord, you generally need to own a town or castle, be independent of other kingdoms, and meet the relevant clan-tier requirement. The option’s location has changed across versions: check the Clan screen first, then speak with the governor of your settlement if you cannot find it. The exact current interface is not confirmed by the available official player-facing documentation.
What you need before creating a kingdom
- A settlement: You must control at least one town or castle to serve as your kingdom’s homeland. TaleWorlds’ API describes kingdom initialization in terms of an initial homeland settlement: Kingdom API documentation. A mod guide also describes a settlement as necessary: Kingdoms mod guide. The API documents a game system, rather than a player-facing walkthrough.
- Independence: Community guidance lists not serving another kingdom as a vassal or mercenary among the creation criteria: community discussion of kingdom eligibility.
- Clan tier: Tier 4 is the commonly reported threshold associated with the Dragon Banner quest route. A tier 2 tooltip that says “Eligible to create a Kingdom” can be mistaken for confirmation that the kingdom can be founded at tier 2: community discussion of kingdom eligibility.
Campaign and sandbox creation are different routes
Campaign: the Dragon Banner route
The campaign’s Dragon Banner quest is one route to founding a kingdom, and community guidance associates its kingdom-creation step with clan tier 4. Do not treat a tier 2 eligibility tooltip as proof that the quest route’s tier 4 threshold has been met. The quest route is not a universal requirement for every mode.
Sandbox: creation outside the main story
Community references describe creating a kingdom in sandbox without completing the main story’s Dragon Banner quest. Historical TaleWorlds patch notes also discuss sandbox kingdom creation. Requirements and the interface may vary by version, so use the in-game options rather than assuming a campaign quest step applies: TaleWorlds patch notes for e1.5.9.
Where to find the Create Kingdom option
- Open the Clan screen and look for a “Create Kingdom” option or hint. TaleWorlds’ e1.5.9 patch notes say the hint was added back to the Clan screen button; this is a historical interface detail, not confirmation of the current menu path: TaleWorlds patch notes for e1.5.9.
- If the option is missing, speak with your settlement’s governor. Later community discussion and a 2023 guide report a governor conversation as another way to create a kingdom. This is community guidance, not a currently verified official instruction: community discussion of kingdom eligibility; 2023 kingdom guide.
“Create Kingdom” is missing: what to check
- Confirm that you own a town or castle. Having a settlement is central to establishing a kingdom; a settlement you do not control will not meet that requirement.
- Check your clan tier against your route. If you are following the Dragon Banner campaign route, check for tier 4. Do not rely on a tier 2 tooltip’s “Eligible to create a Kingdom” wording by itself.
- Make sure you are independent. The commonly reported criteria exclude serving another kingdom as a vassal or mercenary.
- Check both interfaces. Look in the Clan screen, then talk to the governor of your owned settlement. The interface evidence is version-sensitive; the Clan-screen hint is documented in historical official patch notes, while the governor option is reported in community guidance.
- Include your mode and game version when asking for help. Whether you are playing campaign or sandbox, and which version you are running, can help explain why your menu differs from someone else’s.
What happens if your kingdom loses its settlements?
TaleWorlds’ v1.2.7 patch notes state that a kingdom that loses all its fiefs is destroyed and its clans become independent: TaleWorlds patch notes for v1.2.7. That rule makes keeping control of at least one fief consequential after founding a kingdom. The available sources do not establish recommended garrison sizes, treasury amounts, or troop compositions.
