Secret exits in New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe are marked by a red Goal Pole flag instead of the usual black one. Clearing one opens a secret path on the world map, though the exact destination depends on the course. Below are the route cues published by two walkthrough sources, with an important discrepancy noted: their lists differ on whether Seesaw Bridge or Walking Piranha Plants! is included. Treat the inventory as a route-finding guide, not a verified definitive checklist.
How to recognize a secret exit
Look for the red flag on the Goal Pole after finishing a course. Nintendo’s Play Nintendo guidance says that clearing a course through its secret exit unlocks a secret path. “World skip” is a useful shorthand, but check the map after each exit to see which route it actually opens.
The game includes both New Super Mario Bros. U and New Super Luigi U. Nintendo’s current product page lists 164 platforming courses across the two modes; that total is not a count of secret exits. Nintendo’s product page describes the Switch edition.
Secret-exit route cues by course
The following directions summarize published walkthrough cues; they are not claims of independently tested routes. Follow the course names rather than relying on stage numbers where sources conflict.

- Multiplayer sessions are even more fun, frantic, and exciting thanks to entertaining character interactions. Need a boost? Try jumping off a teammate’s head or getting a teammate to throw you.

- Three additional modes—Boost Rush, Challenges, and Coin Battle—mix up gameplay and add replayability, while also upping the difficulty for players who want to try something harder. Players can use their Mii characters in these modes.
Acorn Plains — Tilted Tunnel
Near the red coin ring, use the moving block to climb. Jump again near the wooden blocks and follow the concealed route to the alternate Goal Pole.
Layer-Cake Desert — Spike’s Spouting Sands
Follow the upward-pointing sign to a hidden pipe. The walkthrough says to use a Mini Mushroom, continue right, and pass through a narrow gap to another pipe that leads to the secret exit. Sources disagree about the stage number: the written walkthrough labels it Layer-Cake Desert-5, while NintendoBase’s video labels it Layer-Cake Desert-4. Use the course name unless you confirm the number in your game.
Sparkling Waters — Haunted Shipwreck
In the room with invisible walls, go right to the sign, then return left. Wall-jump to a high hidden alcove to reach the alternate exit.

Why the published exit lists do not fully agree
A written walkthrough claims twelve exits and includes Seesaw Bridge. NintendoBase’s 2019 video also presents twelve route segments, but includes Walking Piranha Plants! instead of Seesaw Bridge. Its timestamps identify Tilted Tunnel (00:00), Spike’s Spouting Sands (02:02), Haunted Shipwreck (03:52), Swaying Ghost House (06:21), Bridge over Poisoned Waters (09:34), Which-Way Labyrinth (11:08), Painted Swampland (12:54), Deepsea Ruins (14:45), Walking Piranha Plants! (16:54), Grinding-Stone Tower (18:41), Spinning Spirit House (21:30), and Meteor Moat (25:49). These differing lists mean the sources do not establish a definitive twelve-course inventory. Check the world map and the course itself rather than assuming either list is complete.
Helpful support while searching
Nintendo says Baby Yoshis can help players reach difficult places and light passages. They accompany the player into the next selected course except towers and castles. They may help with exploration, but none of the route cues above establishes a Baby Yoshi as a requirement for a secret exit.
