That distinction matters: E-Day goes back to the beginning of the series’ timeline, while continuing the mainline franchise. The Coalition said the game does not mean it is abandoning the stories told in Gears 4 and Gears 5.
What is E-Day about?
The story takes place on Sera during Emergence Day, the catastrophe that begins the Locust invasion and shapes the wider Gears universe. Marcus and Dom are younger and have not yet spent years fighting the Locust. The reveal interview puts their relationship at the heart of the story: players see the bond form between them, against the backdrop of shared loss connected to Dom’s brother, Carlos.

Xbox Wire places the game 14 years before the events of the original Gears of War. That is the timeline figure given in the 2024 reveal; it describes the game’s setting, not the time between the reveal and release.
