How Connections works
The New York Times Help Center describes the core task this way: “Players are given 16 words and must find groups of four items that share something in common.” Each group is marked yellow, green, blue, or purple, with yellow generally the easiest and purple the trickiest. There is one intended solution, but words can plausibly fit more than one theme, which is part of the challenge. The Help Center says editors curate words and categories using the Oxford Dictionary.
