These are the hints and answers for NYT Connections on Monday, April 28, 2025, game #687. If you want to solve it yourself, start with the spoiler-light clues below; the complete groups are farther down.
Hints for Connections #687
Connections asks you to sort 16 words into four groups of four. The groups have different difficulty colors, and the guides for this puzzle report that players can make up to four mistakes.
- Yellow: Things used to style your tresses.
- Green: Pared back or minimalist.
- Blue: Vital evidence, such as clues found at a crime scene.
- Purple: Pooped, weary, or drained.
One trap: TIRE and EXHAUST can suggest car parts, but they belong together for a different reason. TIRE MARK is the one that fits the crime-scene clue.
Answers for Connections #687
Spoilers below: the four categories and all 16 answers follow.
#1 Best Overall
- Yellow — HAIR PRODUCTS: GEL, MOUSSE, SPRAY, WAX.
- Green — AUSTERE: BARE, PLAIN, SIMPLE, SPARE.
- Blue — CLUES AT A CRIME SCENE: FIBER, FINGERPRINT, HAIR, TIRE MARK.
- Purple — WEARY: BORE, DRAIN, EXHAUST, TIRE.
Why the tricky words fit
TIRE and EXHAUST are verbs in the WEARY group: to tire or exhaust someone is to wear them out. TIRE MARK is instead a kind of physical evidence, alongside a fiber, fingerprint, or hair. The other two groups point to hair-styling products and words meaning austere or plain.
