Need a nudge for NYT Connections puzzle #668, dated Wednesday, April 9, 2025? Start with the spoiler-safe hints below, then expand the answer sections when you’re ready for the four groups.

Hints for Connections #668

The board has 16 words to sort into four groups of four. These clues move from broad to specific, so stop when you have enough help.

  1. Look for round, three-dimensional things.
  2. Think of different meanings or examples of a punch.
  3. Recall the animals named among the ingredients in the witches’ brew in Macbeth.
  4. For the final group, put the same three-letter animal word before each answer.

The word list is DOG, POP, BALL, SOCK, SLUG, FROG, GLOVE, TROT, BAT, HOUND, GLOBE, POUND, ORB, NEWT, HOLE, and SPHERE.

Yellow: Round three-dimensional objects

BALL, GLOBE, ORB, SPHERE

Green: Punch

POP, POUND, SLUG, SOCK

Blue: Animals in the witches’ brew in Macbeth

BAT, DOG, FROG, NEWT

Purple: FOX___

GLOVE, HOLE, HOUND, TROT. Add FOX to make FOXGLOVE, FOXHOLE, FOXHOUND, and FOXTROT.

Why the groups can be tricky

Some words seem to fit more than one familiar category. BALL, BAT, GLOVE, and SOCK may suggest baseball, but they split across the puzzle’s actual connections: BALL belongs with the round objects, BAT is in the Macbeth group, and SOCK is a kind of punch. Looking for a single connection shared by all four words can help separate a tempting near-match from a real group.
