Each domino is used once, and its two halves can land in different regions—so a placement may affect two clues at the same time.
How NYT Pips works
The board is divided into regions, each marked with a condition. Your job is to place dominoes over the board so every cell is covered and every region meets its condition. The NYT version uses dominoes whose halves show values from 0 through 6, according to a 2026 academic analysis of the game: the paper’s formal description.
Each domino half occupies one cell. If the two halves fall in different regions, each pip value counts toward the rule for the region containing that half. This is why a single tile can help one clue while making another harder.
What the Pips symbols mean
- A number: The values in that region must add up to exactly that number.
- =: Every value in the region must be the same.
- ≠: The values in the region must all be different.
- < n: The region’s total must be less than the displayed number.
- > n: The region’s total must be greater than the displayed number.
For example, in an exact-sum region marked 5, values of 2 and 3 satisfy the clue. In an equality region, the values must match rather than merely add to a target. Rule descriptions and current symbol guidance are covered in Tom’s Guide’s Pips rules guide.

How to place and rotate dominoes
- Select a domino. Choose one from the available tiles.
- Rotate it if needed. Tom’s Guide reports that tapping a domino rotates it; the exact control may vary by device or current game interface.
- Place it across two cells. Make sure the tile fits the board’s shape. Consider which region contains each half, since both values count toward their respective region rules.
- Check the affected clues. A legal-looking placement is not necessarily a useful one: verify that it still leaves a possible way to satisfy all regions.
- Continue until the board is covered. Use every supplied domino exactly once and confirm that all region conditions hold.
For an introductory walkthrough, Tom’s Guide describes an interactive “Play Tutorial” and basic tile selection and rotation in its beginner tutorial. Interface labels and controls can change, so rely on the controls shown in the game if they differ.
A beginner strategy for solving Pips
Rather than placing tiles randomly, start with the clues and board positions that leave the least room for alternatives. This is a practical deduction from the rules, not a guaranteed algorithm.

1. Start with restrictive clues
Look first at small exact totals, equality regions, and distinct-value regions. These constrain which pip values can fit, which can narrow the useful domino choices before you fill open areas.
2. Use board geometry to narrow orientations
Check corners, edges, and narrow sections where a domino has fewer ways to fit. If only one orientation is possible in a tight spot, see whether its values also work with the adjacent region rules.

3. Track what remains possible
After a tentative placement, ask whether the remaining cells and tiles can still satisfy each clue. An exact total that has already been exceeded cannot be repaired; a threshold or distinctness rule can also become impossible if the remaining values leave no valid options.
4. Treat contradictions as a reason to backtrack
If a clue can no longer be met, undo a recent placement and reconsider the tile’s orientation, the region receiving each half, or the order in which you tackled the clues. This is more informative than continuing to fill cells and hoping the final layout works.

Do you have to use every domino?
Yes. The board must be fully covered, and the complete supplied tile set is used once. A board that looks full but leaves a domino unused—or uses a tile more than once—does not satisfy the puzzle’s placement rules. The academic description formalizes Pips as a domino-placement problem in which each tile is used exactly once: 2026 paper on Pips mechanics.
Can a Pips puzzle have more than one answer?
It can. Tom’s Guide reports that some puzzles have multiple valid solutions, so do not assume that one particular arrangement is the only correct one. A solution is valid when it covers the board using the supplied tiles and satisfies every region rule.
A 2026 peer-reviewed conference paper proves a formal solvability problem for generalized Pips instances is NP-complete. That is a result about computational complexity, not evidence that ordinary daily puzzles are impossible or unusually difficult for people to solve.
