Here are hints and the Hard-tier walkthrough for the New York Times Pips puzzle dated Sunday, October 12, 2025. The move sequence below is attributed to a secondary walkthrough; it is not an independently verified reconstruction of the board.
How NYT Pips works
Pips is a New York Times Games logic puzzle in which you place dominoes across a board and satisfy the conditions shown in its colored regions. You can drag a domino into place and tap it to rotate it by 90 degrees. The New York Times Company describes the game and its rules in its August 18, 2025 launch announcement.
- =: all pips in the region must have the same value.
- ≠: the pips in the region must have different values.
- > or <: the values must be greater or less than the indicated number.
- Exact total: the values in the region must add up to its target.
- Unmarked cells: no additional value condition is specified.
The game offers Easy, Medium, and Hard tiers. The sequence below covers Hard.
Hard-tier hints for October 12
- Start with the 4/4 double in the purple equals region: the walkthrough identifies it as the only double among the available tiles.
- Look for the 1/5 and 3/5 dominoes to connect the orange regions with the two blue not-equal groups.
