Green: MITIGATE

CUSHION, DAMPEN, SOFTEN, and TEMPER can each mean to lessen an impact, force, intensity, or severity.

Blue: PATTERNS

CAMO, CHECKERS, HONEYCOMB, and STRIPES each name or suggest a recognizable repeating visual design.

Purple: ___ PIE

CHESS, CUTIE, HUMBLE, and WHOOPIE each form a phrase when placed before “pie”: chess pie, cutie pie, humble pie, and whoopie pie.

The CHESS and CHECKERS trap

CHESS and CHECKERS look like a natural pair because both bring to mind board games and checkered squares. The category link is more exact: CHECKERS belongs with the visual patterns, while CHESS completes the phrase “chess pie” alongside CUTIE, HUMBLE, and WHOOPIE.
