If you want to solve it yourself first, use the hints below before opening the full answer list.
Hints for Connections #599
- One group names things that create an impression or atmosphere.
- One group is food and drink associated with watching a game.
- For one group, each word can be followed by “on” in a relevant sense.
- For the trickiest group, look at the first few letters: each word begins with the name of a European capital.

Spoilers below: the four categories and all 16 words are revealed.
| Category | Words | Why they fit |
|---|---|---|
| INTANGIBLE QUALITY | AIR, AURA, HALO, VIBE | Each can describe an atmosphere, impression, or quality that is not physically tangible. |
| GAME DAY FARE | BEER, DIP, PIZZA, WINGS | These are food and drink associated with game day. |
| KEEP GOING ON ABOUT, WITH “ON” | DWELL, HARP, INSIST, LINGER | Each can pair with “on” in the sense of continuing to discuss, emphasize, or remain on a subject. |
| STARTING WITH EUROPEAN CAPITALS | BERNIE, PARISH, RIGATONI, ROMEO | The words begin with Bern, Paris, Riga, and Rome, respectively. |
The wordplay and the tempting overlap
The blue category is built around familiar phrases such as “dwell on,” “harp on,” “insist on,” and “linger on.” The purple category asks you to spot city names at the starts of longer words: BERN in BERNIE, PARIS in PARISH, RIGA in RIGATONI, and ROME in ROMEO.
HALO, HARP, and WINGS can suggest an angelic connection, but they do not form a group here. HALO belongs with AIR, AURA, and VIBE; WINGS belongs with BEER, DIP, and PIZZA in GAME DAY FARE. About the puzzle date
This answer is for the January 30, 2025 edition, puzzle #599—not a current-day puzzle. Connections presents 16 words for sorting into four related groups, as described in The Economic Times’ report from that date. That report described archive access as requiring a Games subscription at the time; it does not establish the New York Times’ current access terms.
