Hints for Tuesday, July 23
Connections asks you to sort 16 words into four groups of four. Some words can seem to fit more than one theme, so test each possible group against the words left over. If you’re stuck, try rearranging the grid to make potential links easier to see.
- Gentle hint: One group is about something that is not genuine.
- Stronger hint: Another group is about something said or a sound made.
- Stronger hint: One group describes a person who likes showing off.
- Wordplay hint: For the last group, think of Looney Tunes characters whose names are each missing one letter.
Today’s Connections word bank
The 16 words in the grid are HOT DOG, WORD, BUG, TWEET, PEEP, PORK, PEACOCK, QUACK, HAM, SHAM, SPEED, SOUND, FRAUD, NOISE, SHOWBOAT, and CHARLATAN.

Spoilers below: The groups and their answers are listed here.
#1 Best Overall
| Color | Category | Words |
|---|---|---|
| Yellow | Imposter | CHARLATAN, FRAUD, QUACK, SHAM |
| Green | Utterance | NOISE, PEEP, SOUND, WORD |
| Blue | One who likes showing off | HAM, HOT DOG, PEACOCK, SHOWBOAT |
| Purple | Looney Tunes characters minus a letter | BUG, PORK, SPEED, TWEET |
Why the purple group works
Add back the missing letter to each entry to get a Looney Tunes character: BUG becomes BUGS, PORK becomes PORKY, SPEED becomes SPEEDY, and TWEET becomes TWEETY.

A word may have a plausible connection to more than one theme, but each puzzle has one intended solution. Forbes contributor Kris Holt notes that players need to be careful with words that might fit into more than one category. Check whether a candidate set makes sense as a complete group of four—and whether the remaining words form coherent groups—before locking it in.
