Rank #3
| Color | Category | Tiles |
|---|---|---|
| Yellow | Wide-legged pant styles | CULOTTE, GAUCHO, HAREM, PALAZZO |
| Green | Silent “T” | APOSTLE, DEPOT, MORTGAGE, POIROT |
| Blue | New York Mets legends | GOODEN, PIAZZA, SEAVER, STRAWBERRY |
| Purple | Greek mythological figures minus a letter | AJA, ARE, HER, HERCULE |
Why the purple group is tricky
The purple set uses altered names rather than complete names: AJA points to Ajax, ARE to Ares, HER to Hera, and HERCULE to Hercules. The missing-letter pattern is the key; the tiles are not simply four unchanged names from Greek mythology.

Connections presents sixteen tiles and asks you to sort them into four groups of four. The groups are color-coded by difficulty, with yellow generally easiest and purple hardest. Some tiles can appear to fit more than one theme, so look for a precise shared rule rather than stopping at a broad association. TechRadar rated this particular puzzle “Hard”; that is its contributor’s assessment, not an official NYT statistic.
