Hints for Connections #931

  • Shipping: Think of containers or formats used to send items.
  • Stillness: Look for words that mean motionless or unchanged.
  • Timepiece: Find components in a mechanical watch.
  • Wordplay: Change the first letter of each remaining word to reveal a dog breed.

Answers for December 28, 2025

Spoilers below: These are the four groups and their words.

Category Words Why they fit
Containers for shipping BOX, ENVELOPE, MAILER, TUBE Each can hold an item for mailing or shipping.
Unmoving CONSTANT, STATIC, STATIONARY, STILL Each can describe something fixed, motionless, or unchanged.
Mechanical watch parts GEAR, PAWL, RATCHET, SPRING Each names a component used in a mechanical watch.
Dogs with the first letter changed DUSKY, NOODLE, PERRIER, SOXER Change each first letter to form HUSKY, POODLE, TERRIER, and BOXER.

Tricky words and tempting groupings

PAWL belongs with the watch parts

PAWL is the less familiar word in the mechanical-watch group. It belongs with GEAR, RATCHET, and SPRING, rather than forming a group based only on more familiar everyday meanings.

PERRIER is a wordplay answer, not a water clue

SPRING, STILL, and PERRIER may suggest a water-related set, but PERRIER belongs with DUSKY, NOODLE, and SOXER. Changing their first letters gives four dog breeds: HUSKY, POODLE, TERRIER, and BOXER.

STATIONARY means fixed in place

The board has STATIONARY, meaning fixed in place—not STATIONERY, the word for writing paper and supplies.
