How to solve the trickiest group
The purple set is easier to see when you stop treating the words as complete team names. Each is a suffix: BOYS comes from COWBOYS, CONS from FALCONS, IONS from LIONS, and OWNS from BROWNS. The full names reveal the shared rule; by themselves, the four fragments do not look like a natural category.
What the puzzle is testing
The categories rely on different kinds of sports knowledge. The yellow group describes an athlete’s stage, the green group is organized by the hockey teams’ Canadian locations, the blue group depends on college conference membership, and the purple group is a word-pattern puzzle based on NFL names. The answer reports characterize the suffix group as especially difficult, but that is a subjective assessment, not a measured difficulty rating.
