If a StarCraft II hotkey does nothing, triggers the wrong in-game command, launches a desktop action, or disappears after you save it, those are different problems with different checks. Start by noting exactly what happens, then work from reversible focus and binding checks toward profile files or hardware.
First, identify what happens when you press the key
Record the key, the command you expect, and the result. Also note whether the problem began after changing hotkeys, updating the game or operating system, or switching keyboard layouts. Blizzard’s guide says, “Every unit command has a hotkey (or keyboard shortcut) associated with it,” but that does not mean every shortcut failure has the same cause. Blizzard’s StarCraft II Game Guide: Special Control explains basic controls; it is not a fault diagnosis.
- Nothing happens: check whether SC2 has focus, then verify the intended action’s binding.
- A different SC2 action happens: inspect the action’s current binding and any overlapping assignment.
- A desktop or other-app action happens: check focus and compare display modes.
- Your custom setup reverts or disappears: investigate profile persistence, preserving a copy before touching files.
If a desktop action appears instead of the SC2 command
Make sure the game window is active. Alt-Tab away and back to SC2, then test the shortcut again. A July 2021 Windows-related community report described a build hotkey opening Windows Explorer, as if the game were in the background; forum replies suggested checking focus and comparing Windowed with Fullscreen. These are low-risk diagnostic checks, not a confirmed cause or guaranteed fix. Read the community report and replies.
If you use an overlay or another utility that captures keys, close or disable it temporarily only as a controlled test. Change one thing at a time so you can tell whether it affects the result.

If the wrong in-game action happens
Open SC2’s Hotkeys settings and search for the action you intend to trigger. Confirm that the key is assigned to that action—not merely to a similarly named command—and check for conflicting bindings before resetting an entire profile.
Check control-group actions explicitly
Control groups can involve distinct actions, so confirm the exact one you expect. In a February 2021 forum case, a player thought a custom Q control-group and double-Q camera-focus behavior had stopped working. The player later said they had overlooked the “Select Control Group” binding and that their hotkeys had reverted to an older arrangement. That report supports checking the named action and its current assignment; it does not establish a general defect. Read the control-group discussion.

If a custom key cannot be assigned
Check that you are assigning the key to the intended action and that the keyboard layout is the one you normally use. Blizzard’s patch 1.5.2 notes document historical fixes for cases where hotkeys could not be bound in certain keyboard configurations, and for temporary hotkeys being saved after canceling the Hotkey Menu with Escape. Those old notes show that binding defects have existed; they do not establish that an unspecified problem today is the same bug. Blizzard patch 1.5.2 notes.
A 2020 forum thread about assigning F1 to “Jump to location 1” did not produce a verified resolution, so it is not evidence of a current F1 limitation. Read the F1 binding discussion.

If custom hotkeys revert or fail to save
Before file troubleshooting, make a separate backup of your StarCraft II user settings and hotkey profile. Do not delete or overwrite your only copy. Then check whether the profile you edited is the one the game is using and whether the relevant file and folder exist and contain data.
Community reports describe different possibilities, not a universal diagnosis. In an October 2022 Mac thread, a participant suggested an execute-permission issue in an account’s Hotkeys folder and provided a Terminal command. Folder paths and permissions vary, so do not run a command from a forum as a blanket fix. Read the Mac hotkey-profile discussion.

A June 2026 post in a thread about mouse selection reported that a Hotkeys configuration file under Documents/StarCraft II/Accounts/.../Hotkeys had become 0 KB; the poster recommended backing it up but did not know why it happened. That is a report about one file, not proof that a zero-byte file causes shortcut faults generally. Read the thread and its file report.
Check whether the keyboard itself is involved
Try the same key in another application, and if possible test SC2 with a second keyboard or input device. If the key works elsewhere but fails only in SC2, that points toward an in-game focus, binding, or profile issue rather than proving a hardware fault. Consider replacing hardware only if the failure follows the keyboard outside SC2 as well.

When to contact Blizzard
If the problem persists, use Blizzard’s StarCraft II support hub to find technical-support or bug-report options. The hub is general navigation rather than a shortcut-specific troubleshooting article. Open the StarCraft II support hub.
Include the exact key and intended action, what actually happens, reproduction steps, game mode, operating system and version, keyboard layout, whether the issue occurs outside SC2, and whether another input device changes the result. This makes it easier to distinguish a focus issue from a binding, profile, or device problem.
