There is no verified universal best Thermal Tower buff. Prioritize temperature control when extreme weather threatens survival, then choose resource, farming, or combat upgrades to match what your group actually does. The ranking below is a goal-based framework—not a claim that one buff wins in every scenario. Check the current in-game tooltips: tower rules and upgrade details can vary by scenario version.
How to rank Thermal Tower buffs
A Thermal Tower can affect players and territories within its radiation range. The original October 2024 FAQ says a territory receives effects when its center is in range; the entire territory does not need to fit inside the radius. It describes a maximum range of 324 square meters, equivalent to 25 territories in a 5×5 layout. These figures describe the original rules, not necessarily every later scenario version. See the Once Human Development Team’s October 2024 FAQ.
Judge upgrades against the problem you need to solve: immediate survival, ongoing resource or facility value, farming, or combat and defense. Also consider the upgrade’s cost, affected area, duration, Chaosium upkeep, and whether your group can use its benefit. The official sources explain the system but do not compare the value of individual upgrades, so the order below is a practical priority list rather than an official or tested tier ranking.
Priority ranking by player goal
1. Temperature control — first when weather is the threat
If extreme heat or cold is making the area hard to survive in, put temperature management first. The official scenario guide describes the tower as able to alter temperature and environment across a large area, but does not establish that one temperature upgrade is stronger than another. Let the current tooltip and the conditions in your scenario determine which temperature option to take.

2. Resource production and facility value — best for a maintained group base
Resource or production upgrades can be a strong long-term choice when your group can keep the tower supplied and has a use for the output. A 2024 secondary guide, with a page update indicated for 2025, gives sulfur and salt features as examples and lists a temperature-related energy effect that raises fuel-generator output by 10 W. Treat those as examples from that guide, not a complete or confirmed current upgrade list; verify names, requirements, and returns in the live game. GameWith’s Thermal Tower guide.
3. Farming and territory support — valuable only where you use it
Choose farming or facility-support upgrades when the tower’s affected area contains the crops or facilities your group actively relies on. The secondary guide lists farming and other facility-support examples, but the available information does not establish which crops or facilities benefit in every current build. Check the relevant tooltip and confirm the target is inside the effective area before spending an upgrade.

4. Combat and defense — situational, not a default damage ranking
Combat options make sense when you are defending the tower or preparing for a relevant threat. The secondary guide lists examples such as nearby melee-turret damage or durability bonuses and player bonuses to weapon range, firearm damage, or extrasensory strength against a giant threat. It does not establish current values or activation conditions. Check the live tooltip rather than assuming these effects apply everywhere or that one is the best damage upgrade.
What upgrades and upkeep involve
The 2024 official scenario guide organizes tower technology into four modules: Reactor, Thermostatic Cover, Defense Structures, and Radiator, with eight technology types per module in that guide. It also says tower operation consumes Chaosium; if the Depot runs out, the tower stops. Chaosium Waste can be purified once it reaches 80%, and the activity requires defending the tower. See the official Thermal Tower guide for those original system details.
Upkeep matters to upgrade value: a benefit that suits your base is less useful if the group cannot keep the tower operating. The same guide’s module structure can help you locate upgrade categories, but it does not provide a current comparative ranking of their effects.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why scenario version matters
The original October 2024 FAQ says each player could build one tower, towers had to be placed outside territories, and maximum ranges could not overlap. A June 2025 Update Test update for The Way of Winter changed placement: towers could be built inside territories, and owners could share effects through permissions. That update also described progressive extreme-weather spread and Chaosium Hubs, where Chaosium Hearts reduce local extreme weather and Raw Chaosium can provide regional buffs. These are version-specific statements; they do not prove that every current scenario uses the same rules. Read the June 2025 update notes alongside the rules shown in your scenario.
Quick Recap
Risks and checks before investing
- Excessive temperature adjustment: The original FAQ warns that too much adjustment can overload the tower and rapidly reduce its durability. Follow the current interface and avoid assuming more adjustment is always better.
- Long inactivity: The original FAQ says an inactive tower without upgrades for an extended period may be recalled automatically. Check the current scenario rules if the tower will be left unattended.
- Coverage: Confirm that the player, territory center, facility, or other intended target is within the tower’s effective range. Do not rely on the original range figure as a guarantee for later versions.
- Operation: Plan for Chaosium consumption and the defense required for Waste purification; an unpowered tower cannot deliver ongoing effects.
- Upgrade effects: Confirm current names, values, targets, and activation conditions in the in-game tooltip before committing resources.
A practical way to choose
- Identify the immediate problem: dangerous weather, a resource bottleneck, farm or facility needs, or a specific defense encounter.
- Check the tower’s current scenario tooltip for the upgrade’s target, effect, conditions, and any stated cost.
- Verify that the intended players or territory are covered under your scenario’s range and permission rules.
- Account for Chaosium supply and the group’s ability to defend the tower when purification is needed.
- Choose the option that addresses the current bottleneck, then reassess if the scenario, weather, or group activity changes.
