Xenoblade Chronicles X: Definitive Edition is the Switch version of Monolith Soft’s science-fiction action RPG, originally released for Wii U in 2015. It arrived on Nintendo Switch on March 20, 2025, so it is no longer an upcoming release. Nintendo also made a Switch 2 Edition available on February 19, 2026.
What is Xenoblade Chronicles X: Definitive Edition?
It is a standalone science-fiction role-playing game about humanity’s struggle to survive on an unfamiliar planet. Nintendo’s story description places the events in 2054: after Earth is destroyed in an intergalactic war, survivors aboard the White Whale crash-land on Mira. You join the New Los Angeles colony and help establish a new home while exploring the planet’s five continents. Nintendo’s Switch product page presents it as a self-contained story, so you do not need to have played another Xenoblade game to follow this premise.
Exploration and combat sit alongside character customization and mission-based progression. You can customize your avatar’s appearance and class, use special attacks and skills, and build affinity with party members to unlock quests and rewards. The Switch edition adds enhanced visuals and story elements, as well as new characters and a new Skell, according to Nintendo’s announcement and update. Those details identify additions, not a complete feature-by-feature comparison with the Wii U release.
What are Skells?
Skells are customizable giant mechs that you can unlock and use for both exploration and combat. They are central to the game’s appeal if you want more than a conventional party-based RPG: the machines give the planet’s scale and traversal a distinctly mechanized dimension. Nintendo’s English product material identifies their role in exploration and fighting, but does not provide a full breakdown of every Skell capability.

How does online play work?
Nintendo lists online squads, missions designed for multiplayer, and Global Nemesis Battles. Its US product listing says online play supports 1–32 players overall and that squad missions support up to four players; those are separate figures, not a claim that a single mission accommodates 32 people. Online play requires a Nintendo Switch Online membership. The same listing identifies one-player play on a single system.
Switch or Switch 2: which edition should you look at?
| Edition | Availability | Display and performance information | Upgrade path |
|---|---|---|---|
| Switch edition | Released March 20, 2025 | Nintendo’s cited Switch listing does not state comparable resolution or frame-rate targets. | Owners can obtain the Switch 2 Edition upgrade pack, according to Nintendo. |
| Switch 2 Edition | Available February 19, 2026 | Nintendo states targets of up to 4K resolution and up to 60 frames per second in TV mode, and up to 1080p and up to 60 frames per second in handheld mode. These are Nintendo’s stated targets, not independent test results. | Nintendo says the upgrade pack is available to owners of the Switch edition; its price is not stated here. |
Nintendo’s announcement of the Switch 2 Edition sets out those platform targets and the owner upgrade option. The standard Switch release does not acquire the Switch 2 enhancements simply because it is played on newer hardware; check Nintendo’s current store listing for edition and upgrade details before buying.

Nintendo’s US listing shows TV, tabletop, and handheld play modes and lists these supported languages: American English, Traditional Chinese, Spanish, Simplified Chinese, Korean, Japanese, Italian, German, and French. Those are details from the US product page, not a guarantee that every regional listing or release is identical. Nintendo lists itself as publisher. Prices and store availability can change, so check the listing for your region.
