Microsoft has named its next-generation Xbox console Project Helix. The company says it will play Xbox console and PC games and use a custom AMD chip, but it has not announced a consumer release date, price, final specifications or complete compatibility details. The confirmed 2027 milestone is the planned start of developer alpha hardware—not a retail launch.
What is Project Helix?
Project Helix is Microsoft’s announced codename for its next-generation first-party Xbox console. In a March 11, 2026 update, Xbox Vice President of Next Generation Jason Ronald said it is designed to play Xbox console and PC games. Microsoft has not announced the console’s final retail name. The name refers to the console, while Microsoft’s broader next-generation direction encompasses more than one device. Its June 2025 announcement described a portfolio spanning console, handheld, PC, cloud and accessories, and an Xbox experience not confined to one device or store. That strategy does not establish that every PC game, storefront or application will run on Helix. Microsoft’s AMD partnership announcement
When is the next Xbox coming out?
Microsoft has not announced a consumer release date in its cited Project Helix update. The firm’s specific timing statement is that it plans to ship alpha versions of the hardware to developers beginning in 2027. Developer alpha hardware is an early development milestone, not a date for consumers to buy the console. Microsoft’s March 2026 update

A 2027 retail launch has been discussed as a possibility, but is not confirmed. Tom’s Hardware reported on February 3, 2026 that AMD CEO Lisa Su said AMD’s development of Microsoft’s next Xbox was progressing to support a launch in 2027. “Support a launch” describes AMD’s development timing; it is not an announced Microsoft release date. Tom’s Hardware’s report on Su’s remarks
Ronald’s post said Xbox would share more later in 2026, without naming an event date. That is an indication of planned updates, not a launch commitment.

- Consider buying now if you want a console soon, have found a Series X|S price that works for you, or need a current feature or game rather than an unannounced Helix capability.
- Consider waiting if you can do without a console until Microsoft announces Helix’s consumer timing, price and specifications, and you are willing to wait for details before deciding.
- Check before committing if your decision depends on a particular older Xbox game or Series X|S accessory. Microsoft has stated a broad game-playability commitment, but the cited announcement does not settle individual title or accessory support.
What the announcements do—and do not—tell buyers
Project Helix is a real, named next-generation Xbox project, with a stated design goal of playing Xbox console and PC games and a custom AMD SoC. The public details describe direction and development milestones, not a finished retail product. Until Microsoft publishes consumer specifications and availability, treat any specific Helix price, component list, accessory promise or retail launch date as unconfirmed.
