The console specs that matter most are the ones you can see and feel in the games you play: stable frame rate, clear image quality, useful visual effects, practical loading and storage, and support from your TV. A console’s maximum resolution or frame rate is a capability ceiling—not a promise that every game will deliver it. To compare consoles fairly, look at the same game, mode, and display setup.
Which console specs affect gameplay most?
Start with game-specific performance, then consider image quality and reconstruction, visual effects such as ray tracing, loading and storage, and finally whether your display can show the chosen mode. The order can change with the game: a competitive action game may benefit more from responsive, consistent motion, while a visually rich single-player game may make image detail and lighting more important.
- Frame rate and consistency: Check the game’s available modes and whether performance holds steady. A stated maximum or target is not the same as a sustained result.
- Image clarity: Resolution describes image dimensions, but a game may render below its output resolution and use reconstruction or upscaling. Compare the resulting image, not just the “4K” label.
- Effects and trade-offs: Ray tracing can improve lighting, reflections, shadows, or refraction, but the visible result and performance cost depend on the game and the effects its developer chooses.
- Loading and storage: Capacity affects how many games you can keep installed. Storage design and throughput can also affect loading and asset streaming, but no fixed improvement applies to every game.
- Display and connection: A mode is useful only if the game, console, TV, and any receiver or other device in the signal path support it.
What do resolution, frame rate, refresh rate, and VRR mean?
- Resolution is the number of pixels in an image, such as 1920×1080 or 3840×2160. A 4K output does not prove that every frame was rendered natively at 4K; reconstruction may be involved.
- Frame rate is how many frames a game produces or targets per second, expressed in fps. A higher frame rate can make motion look smoother and controls feel more responsive, but it may require a game to reduce resolution or effects.
- Refresh rate is how often a display can refresh, measured in hertz (Hz). A 120 Hz screen can display high-frame-rate output only when the console, game, connection, and selected mode also support it.
- Variable refresh rate (VRR) lets a compatible display adjust its refresh timing to match changing frame delivery. Support at both ends—and compatible content or settings—is required.
- Upscaling or reconstruction creates a higher-resolution output from a lower-resolution render. Sony calls the PS5 Pro approach PSSR, an AI-enhanced 4K technique for compatible games.
What do the current console specifications tell you?
Manufacturer specifications show what a platform can support; they do not establish how well every game performs. The figures below describe listed capabilities, not a controlled, game-by-game performance ranking.
| Console | Listed graphics and display capabilities | Built-in storage and expansion | What to keep in mind |
|---|---|---|---|
| PlayStation 5 Pro | Sony describes compatible games as playable at 60 fps or up to 120 fps, with ray tracing and AI-enhanced 4K using PSSR at the same time. | 2 TB SSD. | The simultaneous 4K, ray tracing, and high-frame-rate claim is scoped to compatible games, not the entire library. |
| Xbox Series X | Microsoft lists a 12-TFLOPS custom RDNA 2 GPU with 52 compute units at 1.825 GHz, “True 4K” gaming resolution, and performance up to 120 FPS. | 1 TB or 2 TB internal SSD, depending on edition. Series X|S Storage Expansion Cards are described as matching internal SSD performance; USB 3.1 external HDD support is also listed. | Microsoft also lists Auto Low Latency Mode, HDMI Variable Refresh Rate, and AMD FreeSync. A 12-TFLOPS figure is not a direct prediction of game frame rate or image quality. |
| Nintendo Switch 2 | Its 7.9-inch LCD is 1920×1080 with HDR10 and VRR up to 120 Hz. In TV mode, listed maximum output is 3840×2160 at 60 fps, or 120 fps at 1920×1080 or 2560×1440. | 256 GB UFS storage, with some space reserved for system use; microSD Express cards up to 2 TB are supported. | Nintendo lists a custom NVIDIA processor but does not publish a comparable CPU/GPU model or TFLOPS figure on its specification page. Pair TV-mode maximums with the game and selected mode. |
Sony’s PS5 Pro wording is a compatible-game capability, while Microsoft describes Xbox Series X performance as “up to” 120 FPS. Neither phrase guarantees that every title reaches that rate. Nintendo’s Switch 2 figures distinguish TV output from the built-in handheld screen, so do not treat them as interchangeable modes.

Why is TFLOPS not a console ranking?
TFLOPS is a theoretical measure of GPU arithmetic throughput. It does not capture all the factors that determine how a particular game looks or runs, including architecture, software, optimization, and the settings a developer selects. Comparing a 12-TFLOPS figure with another console’s number cannot establish which will deliver the better experience in a game.
For a meaningful performance comparison, use the same title and compare equivalent modes. Look for sustained frame rate and drops, image clarity and reconstruction artifacts, the specific ray-tracing effects present, and loading behavior. Manufacturer specifications establish platform capabilities; a performance ranking requires controlled, like-for-like testing.

What does ray tracing do in games?
Ray tracing simulates how light interacts with objects and surfaces to create additional visual detail. Sony’s PS5 FAQ describes possible effects in water, glass, light refraction, shadows, and surfaces; which effects appear depends on the developer’s implementation. Ray tracing is not a single visual setting with the same result in every game, and its performance cost is game-specific.
A game-specific example is Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart. Insomniac Games Core Technology Director Mike Fitzgerald said its PS5 Pro Performance Pro mode combines the crisp 4K resolution and ray-tracing features of Fidelity mode with the 60-frames-per-second performance mode. He also described a Fidelity Pro mode with additional ray-tracing-based rendering features. Those are descriptions of named modes in that game, not a benchmark or promise for other titles.

Is 4K at 120 Hz worth it for console gaming?
It is worthwhile only if the games you play offer a mode that benefits from it and your display and signal path support the required resolution and refresh rate. A 120 Hz TV does not make a game run at 120 fps by itself, and a console’s support for 4K output does not mean every game renders natively at 4K. Some games may prioritize a higher frame rate by lowering resolution or reducing effects.
If you are deciding whether your setup can use a mode, check the exact TV input—not just the TV’s advertised headline specification—and check any receiver or switch between the console and screen. Sony recommends the cable included with PS5, or generally an Ultra High Speed HDMI cable. That recommendation does not mean every PS5 owner needs to buy another cable.

How should you compare storage?
Compare usable capacity, the size of the games you plan to install, and the platform’s supported expansion method. A stated capacity is not all available for games: Switch 2 reserves part of its 256 GB for system use. For additional storage, compatibility matters as much as capacity.
- PS5 Pro: Sony lists 2 TB of built-in SSD storage.
- Xbox Series X: Microsoft lists 1 TB or 2 TB internal SSD configurations depending on edition. Its Series X|S Storage Expansion Cards are designed to match internal SSD performance; USB 3.1 external HDD support is also listed.
- Switch 2: Nintendo lists 256 GB of UFS storage and support for microSD Express cards up to 2 TB. A regular microSD card that is not microSD Express can only be used to copy screenshots and videos from the original Switch; it is not the supported game-storage expansion format for Switch 2.
Storage can affect loading and streaming, but capacity alone does not tell you how quickly a particular game loads. A fixed load-time claim needs a named game and a comparable test.

Which specs should you prioritize for your games?
- For games where quick response matters: Check whether the game has a performance mode, its frame-rate target, how consistently it runs, and whether your display supports the relevant refresh rate and VRR.
- For visually detailed single-player games: Compare image clarity, reconstruction quality, and which effects the game actually uses. Do not assume a console-level ray-tracing label means every game includes the same effects.
- For a mixed or shared library: Check installed storage and compatible expansion, then weigh the games and modes you expect to use rather than choosing on a GPU number alone.
- For handheld play: Treat Switch 2 handheld and TV use as different display conditions. The built-in screen and docked output have different resolutions and capabilities.
