If NieR: Automata crashes, freezes, shows a black screen, or will not launch on Steam Deck, start by installing available SteamOS updates and restarting the Deck. If that does not help, temporarily disable third-party apps, check the game’s current compatibility listing, try the latest Proton version, lower graphics settings, and verify the installed files. These are troubleshooting steps—not a guaranteed game-specific fix; the cause depends on the individual Deck and crash.
Work through these steps in order
Start with changes that address system-wide instability, then move to settings and files for this particular game. After each step, launch NieR: Automata and check whether the problem persists; this helps identify which change, if any, made a difference.
1. Install SteamOS updates and restart
Connect the Deck to the internet, install any available system updates, and restart it fully. Steam lists updating the system and restarting among its first steps for Deck instability. See Steam Deck troubleshooting.
2. Temporarily disable third-party Desktop Mode applications
If you installed third-party applications through Desktop Mode, exit or disable them temporarily, then restart the Deck and try the game again. Steam recommends disabling third-party applications when Steam apps are unstable. This is a diagnostic step, not evidence that any particular app is responsible.

3. Check the game’s current Steam Deck compatibility details
Open NieR: Automata in your Steam library or on the Steam store and review its current Deck compatibility information. Valve uses four categories—Verified, Playable, Unsupported, and Unknown—and its compatibility reviews can change over time. The current rating for this game is not established here, so check the live listing rather than relying on an older rating or community post. See Valve’s Steam Deck compatibility overview.
4. Try the latest Proton version
For the Steam copy, open the game’s Properties and find the Compatibility settings. Enable the option to force a specific compatibility tool, then select the latest Proton version available in the current Steam interface. Try launching the game again.
Steam presents forcing a compatibility tool as a troubleshooting option, not a confirmed fix for NieR: Automata. Steam also notes that forcing Proton may cause the Windows version of a game to download if only a Linux version was installed. Instructions and labels may change; consult Steam’s Deck troubleshooting guide.

5. Lower graphics settings
If the game launches but becomes unstable during play, try a lower graphics preset or reduce individual graphics settings. Steam recommends lowering settings to reduce system load when performance or stability is a problem, but does not specify a NieR: Automata-specific preset. Change settings gradually so you can tell whether one adjustment affects the crash.
6. Verify the installed game files
Square Enix recommends validating the PC game’s installation when it crashes, fails to start, or displays a black screen. In Steam, open the game’s Properties and look for the installed-files verification option; its exact label or location may differ in the current Steam Deck interface. Let Steam complete the check, then try launching the game again. See Square Enix’s PC crash troubleshooting article.
7. Contact Steam Support if the problem continues
If none of these steps resolves the issue, contact Steam Support. Include details that can help describe the problem:

What the crash pattern can tell you
If only NieR: Automata is affected
Focus on the game’s live compatibility details, the Proton setting, and the installed-file check. A problem limited to one title does not establish its cause, but these steps are specific to that game’s launch and installation path.
If several unrelated games are unstable
Give more attention to system updates, a full restart, and temporarily disabling third-party Desktop Mode applications, then share the broader pattern with Steam Support. Instability across multiple games does not by itself prove a hardware fault, so avoid replacing parts without a diagnosis.
What is—and is not—known about this issue
Steam and Square Enix provide general troubleshooting guidance, but the steps above do not establish a universal fix or identify why a particular Deck crashes. A community thread titled “Nier automata keeps freezing” shows one way players describe the problem; it is anecdotal and does not establish how common the issue is or confirm a solution. There is no supported crash rate or success percentage to apply to your case.
