The Nintendo Switch 2’s C button opens GameChat, Nintendo’s built-in feature for voice chat, game-screen sharing and optional video chat with approved friends. The button’s purpose is no longer a mystery: Nintendo explained it when it announced Switch 2 on April 2, 2025.
What does the C button do on Switch 2?
Press C on a Joy-Con 2 to open the C Menu and access GameChat. You can also open the C Menu from the HOME Menu. During a GameChat session, the same button brings up controls for settings such as the microphone, camera and screen sharing. Nintendo’s GameChat guide and Nintendo UK overview describe it as a way to start a session, join an invitation and adjust session settings.

The C button is a shortcut into GameChat, not a separate social network or a general-purpose chat app. In an official Nintendo developer interview, GameChat producer Kouichi Kawamoto put it simply: “This is the button you press to use GameChat.” He said Nintendo wanted voice chat to be a feature of the system itself. On the original Switch, Nintendo instead offered voice chat through a smart-device app because of technical limits.
What is GameChat?
GameChat lets you talk with approved friends while playing. Friends can be playing the same game or different games, and participants can share game screens or join video chat. Nintendo’s current feature page and its Switch 2 launch announcement say a session can include up to 12 friends. That is the session size, not the number who can share video or screens:

- The next evolution of Nintendo Switch
- One system, three play modes: TV, Tabletop, and Handheld
- Larger, vivid, 7.9” LCD touch screen with support for HDR and up to 120 fps
- Dock that supports 4K when connected to a compatible TV*
- GameChat** lets you voice chat, share your game screen, and connect via video chat as you play
- Voice chat: Uses the Switch 2’s built-in microphone; a separate microphone is not required.
- Screen sharing: Up to four people can share their game screens in a session.
- Video chat: Up to four people can participate, using compatible cameras.
Sharing may be turned off automatically on sensitive screens, such as when entering a password or payment details. Age ratings and parental-control settings can also affect what participants are able to view.
Do I need a camera to use GameChat?
No camera is needed for voice chat. Video chat does require a compatible USB camera. Nintendo’s Switch 2 Camera page identifies the Nintendo Switch 2 Camera as a separately sold option and says compatible third-party USB-C cameras may also work. Nintendo cautions that not every camera works as intended; use the console’s Test USB Camera feature to check a model before relying on it.

Who can use GameChat, and what safety controls are included?
GameChat is designed for approved friends. Nintendo says children under 16 need a parent or guardian to approve GameChat through the updated Parental Controls app. A parent or guardian must also approve each time a younger user starts video chat. The C Menu includes an option to report inappropriate behavior during a session. Nintendo’s parent guidance advises parents to encourage children to talk with a trusted adult about a report.
GameChat is exclusive to Nintendo Switch 2. Nintendo’s original Switch voice-chat feature in its mobile app cannot be used to join a GameChat session.
