In Terraria 1.4.5, town NPCs still need suitable housing, and their placement matters for both shop prices and pylon access. Use the housing menu to assign homes and check rooms; then arrange residents around the biomes and pylons you actually use. The current-version context here covers PC, console, and mobile, except the bespoke China Mobile edition, as announced by Re-Logic on January 27, 2026 (official announcement).
Do I still need to build NPC housing in Terraria 1.4.5?
Yes. NPCs need a suitable house to live in town, and housing also lets you assign residents to particular homes. Terraria 1.4.5 adds an in-game aid for homeless NPCs: their Housing dialogue option gives instructions for building a suitable house (Terraria Wiki: NPC). That guidance helps you get started; it does not make housing optional.

How do I check whether a house is suitable?
- Open the housing menu.
- Select the assignment control and choose the NPC, then select the home where you want that NPC to live.
- Use the housing query on the room to check whether the game considers it suitable. If it fails, adjust the room and query it again.
The housing menu provides both assignment controls and the suitability query (Terraria Wiki: House). If an NPC is homeless, speak to them and choose Housing for the 1.4.5 construction guidance. The practical check is the in-game query; the available current-version information here does not establish a complete room-size or furniture checklist.
How does NPC happiness affect prices?
Happiness can change vendor prices, so where an NPC lives may affect the cost of items bought from or sold to that vendor. Biome and neighbor preferences are part of happiness, but an exact recommended placement depends on the NPC and the current version. For vendors with a biome-specific condition, you may need to speak to the vendor while standing in the relevant biome for that condition to apply (Terraria Wiki: NPC).

- Build up a hospital from nothing to a masterpiece as you design the most beautiful – or functional – healthcare operation in the whole of Two Point County.
- Optimise your hospital design to increase patient (and cash) flow, arranging corridors, rooms and waiting areas to your exact specifications.
- Expand your hospital to multiple buildings as you look to get as many patients through the door as possible.
- Place decorative and functional items around your hospital to improve its prestige, lower patient boredom, increase happiness and keep those end of year awards flowing in.
- Features two great expansions, 21 hospitals and 119 very unusual illnesses!
For a practical layout, start with the vendors you use most: place them where their relevant biome conditions can be met, and consider happiness when choosing nearby residents. The evidence available for this guide does not support a complete current NPC-by-NPC preference chart or universal price multipliers, so avoid treating any one neighborhood arrangement as best for every world.
How many NPCs do I need near a pylon?
The sourced proximity check is at least two housed NPCs within a 169-by-124-tile rectangle centered on the pylon. The count can include the Old Man and town pets (Terraria Wiki: Pylons). This describes the local population requirement; it is not a complete list of every possible pylon-use condition.

Can town pets count?
Yes, for the nearby housed-NPC count. But pets do not count as happiness neighbors and do not change other NPCs’ happiness (Terraria Wiki: Town Pet). A pet can therefore help meet the local population check without serving as a happiness-boosting neighbor.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why do older pylon guides give different happiness thresholds?
Thresholds have changed between updates. Terraria’s official 2022 update notes describe a pylon happiness threshold change from 0.85 to 0.9 and clarify that lower values mean happier NPCs (official July 2022 update notes). That is a dated change, not a reliable standalone rule for Terraria 1.4.5: the current NPC reference also notes a later happiness-threshold change (Terraria Wiki: NPC). Check current in-game feedback rather than relying on an old threshold as timeless advice.
