Nintendo Switch 2 Review: A Stronger Hybrid, With Real Trade-Offs

Switch 2 improves the hybrid-console formula with a larger 1080p screen and stronger performance, but the value depends on your games, storage needs, and handheld habits.

Nintendo Switch 2 is a substantial upgrade to the hybrid-console formula: a larger 7.9-inch 1080p screen, more capable hardware, magnetic Joy-Con 2 controllers with mouse functionality in compatible games, and support for many original Switch games. Whether it is worth buying depends on your budget, how much you play handheld, and whether its current game library and your existing collection make the upgrade worthwhile.

What you get with Nintendo Switch 2

Released on June 5, 2025, Switch 2 can be played as a handheld or connected to a TV through its dock. Nintendo lists a 7.9-inch 1080p LCD screen and 256 GB of internal storage. In docked mode, it supports output up to 4K at a maximum of 60 fps; up to 120 fps is supported at lower resolutions when the game and display allow it. These are capability limits, not a guarantee that every game runs at those settings. Nintendo’s system specifications provide the official details.

The box includes the console, two Joy-Con 2 controllers, a grip, controller straps, a dock, an HDMI cable, an AC adapter, and a USB-C charging cable, according to Nintendo’s US launch announcement. Joy-Con 2 attach magnetically, and either controller can act as a mouse in compatible games. That is a useful extra control option, not a feature every game uses.

Does it have the games?

The answer depends on what you want to play. Switch 2 has its own games, including Mario Kart World, while it can also play compatible physical and digital games from the original Switch. Nintendo’s compatibility support guide warns that some titles may not be supported or fully compatible; it is the right place to check a particular game, accessory, or upgrade before buying. Some games receive free updates, while others offer paid upgrades. See Nintendo’s Switch 2 compatibility guide.

#1 Best Overall
Nintendo Switch 2 System
  • The next evolution of Nintendo Switch
  • One system, three play modes: TV, Tabletop, and Handheld
  • Larger, vivid, 7.9” LCD touch screen with support for HDR and up to 120 fps
  • Dock that supports 4K when connected to a compatible TV*
  • GameChat** lets you voice chat, share your game screen, and connect via video chat as you play

TechRadar’s review, published June 30, 2025, judged the performance improvements and backward compatibility compelling but described the launch selection as relatively small. That is a dated assessment of the launch-era library, not a measure of the current catalog. If you are buying for one specific game, confirm that it is available for Switch 2 or works as expected through backward compatibility rather than assuming the platform’s library meets your needs.

What changes—and what does not—when you bring a Switch library

Compatibility with games does not mean every original accessory carries over in the same way. Original Switch Joy-Con and the original Switch Pro Controller can pair wirelessly with Switch 2. The original Joy-Con do not attach to the new console, and you need Switch 2 or a compatible charging accessory to recharge them. The original Switch dock is not compatible.

Storage is another important difference. Switch 2 has 256 GB of internal storage, and Nintendo says microSD Express cards are required to expand storage for Switch 2 games. A conventional microSD card is not a substitute for game storage; Nintendo says those cards can only be used to view screenshots and videos captured on the original Switch. If you expect to download several games, factor a compatible expansion card into the cost.

How much does it cost, and is the bundle better value?

Nintendo of America’s 2025 launch announcement listed a US MSRP of $449.99 for the console and $499.99 for a bundle that included a digital copy of Mario Kart World. These are launch MSRP figures, not current prices. Check the current price and bundle contents in your region before deciding; prices, availability, and offers can change.

Launch option US launch MSRP Included game What to weigh
Switch 2 console $449.99 None stated in Nintendo’s US launch announcement Add the cost of any game and microSD Express storage you plan to buy.
Switch 2 bundle $499.99 Digital copy of Mario Kart World Compare the current bundle price with the console plus the game bought separately; the launch MSRP alone does not establish today’s savings.

The bundle makes most sense if you want Mario Kart World and the current bundle price compares favorably with buying the console and game separately. If you would not choose that game, the bundle’s headline price does not by itself make it better value. Also include any storage expansion or replacement accessories in your total rather than comparing console prices alone.

How it feels to play: screen, performance, and battery life

TechRadar’s reviewer said they tested Switch 2 for just over two weeks in handheld and docked modes, playing a mix of Switch 2 and original Switch games. They praised the performance improvement and backward compatibility, while criticizing handheld battery life. Those are the findings of that independent review, not a guarantee of how long the console will last in your particular games or conditions.

The larger, higher-resolution screen and the option to play on a TV make the upgrade especially appealing if you want one system for both settings. If long sessions away from an outlet are central to your use, treat the review’s battery-life criticism as a reason to investigate further and consider how often you can recharge—not as a precise runtime estimate.

Who should buy it?

It makes the strongest case for

  • Players who want a single console for handheld and docked play and value the larger, 1080p display.
  • Original Switch owners whose favorite games are confirmed compatible and who want newer hardware for new releases.
  • Buyers who already want Mario Kart World and find a current bundle price worthwhile.

Consider waiting or budgeting carefully if

  • Your main reason to upgrade is a specific original Switch game or accessory: verify its compatibility first.
  • You rely on long handheld sessions away from power, given the battery-life concern reported by TechRadar.
  • You expect a large digital library: include the cost of microSD Express expansion in your decision.
  • The current game selection does not yet include enough titles you want to justify the purchase.

Verdict

Switch 2 is a meaningful refinement rather than a novelty-led redesign: the larger screen, improved performance, flexible TV and handheld play, and broad—but not universal—original Switch compatibility give it a strong foundation. It is a convincing buy for players who will use those upgrades and have games they want to play. The case is less clear if you are satisfied with your current Switch, depend on extended handheld battery life, or would need to spend heavily on games and storage. Decide around your own library and play habits, not the launch-era price or launch lineup alone.
