The clearest comparison Bethesda itself makes is in progression: the remaster’s redesigned leveling system draws inspiration from both games. Its other changes update the presentation and play while aiming to preserve Oblivion’s core identity.
What the remaster changes—and what it aims to preserve
Bethesda describes Oblivion Remastered as a remaster rather than a remake: the original game’s logic and vision remain, while its presentation and selected features are updated. In its April 22, 2025 launch message, Bethesda Game Studios put the aim this way: “We never wanted to remake it – but remaster it – where the original game was there as you remember playing it, but seen through today’s technology.” Read Bethesda’s launch message.
The studio’s feature article describes an Unreal Engine 5 visual overhaul, including recreated environments and character models, updated lighting, lip-syncing, locomotion, and combat animation. It also names practical changes such as sprinting, an improved third-person view with a crosshair, an updated interface, and newly recorded dialogue. Those are concrete reasons the game may feel different to returning players, without making it a different Elder Scrolls story. Bethesda’s feature article details the changes.
Leveling is the clearest bridge between Oblivion and Skyrim
Bethesda says the remaster’s redesigned leveling system takes inspiration from both Oblivion and Skyrim. That makes progression the most direct, officially documented point of comparison between the remaster and the later game. It also suggests the project is not simply restoring every part of the original unchanged.
#1 Best Overall
Bethesda’s description does not specify the exact mechanics or explain which elements came from each game. Without that detail, it would be misleading to claim the redesign reproduces a particular system or settles which game has better progression. What it does establish is a deliberate attempt to modernize this part of Oblivion while drawing on both entries.
How to judge Oblivion beside Skyrim
The remaster supports a useful comparison, but not a verdict on which RPG is better. Bethesda’s statements establish its design intentions and listed features; they do not measure player preference or provide a comprehensive, independently verified comparison of quests, exploration, combat depth, or world design.
Rank #2
- EXPAND TO 8 PLAYERS: This expansion increases the player count from the base game, allowing 5–8 players to explore Skyrim together in epic, large-scale tabletop adventures.
- MORE HEROES, MORE CHAOS: Supports bigger parties and bolder strategies, perfect for groups who want deeper cooperation, rivalry, and emergent storytelling across the province of Skyrim.
- SEAMLESS CAMPAIGN INTEGRATION: Designed to plug directly into The Elder Scrolls: Skyrim – Adventure Board Game, preserving narrative depth, progression, and immersive gameplay.
- PERFECT FOR GAME NIGHTS & EVENTS: Ideal for larger gaming groups, clubs, and marathon sessions where more players means more interaction, alliances, and unforgettable moments.
- EXPANSION ONLY: Requires The Elder Scrolls: Skyrim – Adventure Board Game base game to play; enhances existing campaigns without replacing core systems.
- For a sense of original identity: Consider whether the remaster’s updated visuals, interface, dialogue, and combat presentation still feel like the Oblivion you want to play. Bethesda says preserving the original’s core was the goal; that is the developer’s framing, not an independent assessment.
- For progression: The official description identifies a blend of inspiration from Oblivion and Skyrim, but does not spell out the resulting mechanics. Judge the system in play rather than assuming its details from the announcement.
- For content: Bethesda’s product page lists Shivering Isles, Knights of the Nine, and additional downloadable content as included. Check Bethesda’s product page for current platform and content details.
That distinction matters when interpreting claims that fans are “realising” one game is superior. A returning player may prefer Oblivion’s particular identity, or prefer Skyrim; an individual reaction is not evidence of a broad consensus. The strongest case for giving Oblivion another look is more specific: the remaster makes its older design accessible through modern presentation, while its progression redesign explicitly looks to both games.
