OSRS “lag” can mean a delayed connection, low frame rate, stuttering while the game loads, or delayed input—and each calls for a different fix. Start by identifying what you see, then follow the matching checks below before considering new hardware.
First, identify what kind of lag you have
Jagex separates connection problems, graphical performance problems, and input lag. These symptoms can overlap, so treat them as clues rather than proof of a single cause. Jagex Support describes high ping as a longer round trip for information between your device and the game server, and notes that poor connection is a common cause of lag (Framerate and latency issues).
| What you notice | Likely area to check first |
|---|---|
| Your character freezes, then catches up; clicks are delayed; ping is high; or the problem clusters around particular times or worlds. | Connection and world selection. |
| Movement looks choppy or the frame rate stays low, especially in busy areas or fights. | Graphics performance, device capability, or input factors. |
| Stutters follow a teleport or area change, and objects or scenery appear slowly. | Asset loading and the game cache. |
| The client closes unexpectedly or will not start. | Client, drivers, cache, device requirements, or—in a specific activity-related pattern—LootTracker data. |
A problem that appears only on certain worlds or at certain times points toward a connection issue; consistently low frame rates point more toward graphics or input factors. Busy areas and fights can involve either connection or graphics performance.
Check the service and troubleshoot connection lag
If the game freezes and catches up, ping is elevated, or actions arrive late, start with the network branch. Jagex recommends checking service status and comparing the problem across worlds and times (Framerate and latency issues).

- Check the RuneScape server status. If there is a reported service issue, local device changes may not resolve it.
- Try a world geographically closer to you, then see whether the issue is limited to one world or time of day.
- Restart your modem and router. Temporarily turn off a VPN while troubleshooting, since it can interfere with access.
- If you use Wi-Fi and can do so, connect with Ethernet for a test. A wired connection may help diagnose wireless instability; it will not improve a graphics-bound frame rate or fix a client crash.
- Check whether other games or apps are also slow. If they are, investigate the broader connection rather than changing OSRS graphics settings.
Jagex’s network guidance recommends connecting directly to a modem by Ethernet if possible because wireless connections can be unstable (Connectivity issues). A cable is relevant only to connection troubleshooting, not a universal remedy.
Fix low FPS and stuttering
If the image itself is choppy or frame rate remains low, work through graphics and device checks. A network upgrade is unlikely to address consistently low FPS.

Check the OSRS client requirements
Jagex’s current recommended-specifications page lists these requirements for the OSRS official client. Requirements can change, so verify the live page for your platform; its separate RuneScape client table is not the OSRS table (Download Old School RuneScape).
| Platform | Jagex-listed OSRS official-client specifications |
|---|---|
| Windows | Windows 10 or later (64-bit); Intel i3-6100 or AMD at 2.4 GHz or higher; GeForce GTX 600 Series, AMD Radeon R7 260, or Intel UHD Graphics 610; 8 GB RAM; 200 MB available storage; OpenGL 4.4 and Vulkan 1.1. |
| macOS | macOS 11 (Big Sur) or later; 4 GB RAM; 2 GB free storage. |
| Android | Android Pie 9.0 or later; 4 GB RAM; OpenGL ES 3.1 or later; 2 GB free storage. |
| iOS | iOS 13 or later; 3 GB RAM; OpenGL ES 3.0; 2 GB available storage. |
Jagex lists RuneLite and HDOS among approved third-party clients, but that does not mean they have identical support or requirements to the official client. Jagex also says Steam Deck is currently unsupported and may not have full functionality (Download Old School RuneScape).

Lower graphics demand and check the GPU
- Update your graphics driver and operating system, then restart the device.
- Lower the client’s graphics settings and close programs you do not need while playing.
- If your computer has both integrated and dedicated graphics, check that OSRS is using the dedicated GPU.
- On a laptop, check its power settings and make sure vents are unobstructed. Heat or a restrictive power profile can affect performance.
- Do not use Safe Mode as an FPS fix: Jagex says it uses the CPU instead of the graphics card, so low FPS in Safe Mode can be expected. It is a compatibility fallback, not a performance setting.
Jagex’s troubleshooting guidance covers graphics settings, drivers, background programs, power settings, and selecting the dedicated graphics card when available (Framerate and latency issues; Client troubleshooting).
Let the cache finish after teleporting or changing areas
If stuttering or slow scenery appears mainly after changing areas, give the client time to finish loading its cache. Jagex says an incomplete cache can reduce performance and cause lag, particularly after moving to a new area. Its support article describes the developer-console overlay command displayfps, which shows FPS and disk-cache progress (Client troubleshooting).

- Open the client’s developer console and enter
displayfps. - Check the displayed disk-cache progress and allow loading to finish before judging performance after an area change.
- If the cache does not complete or the client remains unstable, follow Jagex’s current cache-clearing or reinstall guidance rather than repeatedly changing network settings.
Troubleshoot crashes and startup failures
For a client that crashes or will not launch, Jagex’s general sequence is to verify specifications, restart, update graphics drivers, reinstall or clear the cache, and scan for malware (Client troubleshooting).
- Compare your device and platform with the current OSRS client requirements above.
- Restart the device and install available graphics-driver and operating-system updates.
- Clear the client cache or reinstall, following the instructions for your platform in Jagex’s troubleshooting guide.
- Scan for malware if crashes persist.
Use ::repairlt only for the documented LootTracker crash pattern
Jagex documents a narrower case: crashes during certain OSRS actions such as killing or looting an NPC, Mining, Woodcutting, or Fishing may be related to a LootTracker save. In a safe area, enter ::repairlt in chat to check or repair that save. Jagex says the command can take up to a minute and may slow the game while it runs; follow the current support instructions (Client troubleshooting).
