If you already own the Switch version, you can generally buy an upgrade pack instead of the full bundle; the added edition content requires a Nintendo Switch 2.
What’s included in a Switch 2 Edition?
There is no single upgrade that applies to every game. Each edition has its own additions, which may include technical improvements, new gameplay, or both. Nintendo’s catalog, marked current as of September 9, 2026, lists the following titles in Japan; release status and naming can differ by region, so check the local Nintendo page for availability.
- The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild
- The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom
- Super Mario Party Jamboree + Jamboree TV
- Kirby and the Forgotten Land + Star-Crossed World
- Pokémon Legends: Z-A
- Metroid Prime 4: Beyond
- Xenoblade Chronicles X: Definitive Edition
- Super Mario Bros. Wonder + Meetup in Bellabel Park
- Xenoblade Chronicles: Definitive Edition
Nintendo Japan’s Switch 2 Edition catalog lists each game’s edition content. The examples below show why it’s worth checking the details for a specific title rather than assuming every upgrade is the same.
What do the Zelda editions add?
Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom received their Switch 2 Editions on June 5, 2025, according to Nintendo Japan. Both add higher resolution and frame rate, HDR support, and access to ZELDA NOTES. HDR in TV mode requires a compatible display. Nintendo’s description of smoother frame rates, faster loading, enhanced resolution, and textures for Tears of the Kingdom appears on its US store listing for that game; it should not be taken as a specification for every Switch 2 Edition.

For Tears of the Kingdom, Nintendo’s US upgrade-pack listing gives owners of the Switch game a way to access the edition’s additions without buying the full game bundle. Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack members can access selected upgrade packs, including both Zelda packs, at no additional cost when they have the corresponding Switch game and meet the applicable membership conditions. What changes in Super Mario Party Jamboree?
Super Mario Party Jamboree – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition + Jamboree TV adds more than a technical refresh. Nintendo describes Jamboree TV content, additional Mario Party modes and minigames, and features including CameraPlay, Bowser Live, Carnival Coaster, and GameShare. Nintendo UK also lists play using mouse controls and a microphone. The edition’s listed output is up to 1440p in TV mode and 1080p in tabletop and handheld modes; those figures describe the Switch 2 Edition presentation, not a claim that the original Switch game renders at those resolutions.

Some CameraPlay features require a compatible USB-C camera, sold separately. The camera is not required for every mode. Nintendo’s feature overview and UK edition catalog describe the added play options. The Jamboree Switch 2 Edition was released July 24, 2025, according to Nintendo Japan’s catalog.
What’s new in Xenoblade Chronicles: Definitive Edition?
Nintendo’s June 10, 2026 Direct announcement says the Switch 2 Edition adds a high-speed vehicle, racing modes with in-game rewards, equipment designs, and additional voiceover in Heart-to-Heart scenes. Existing Switch owners can buy an upgrade pack. These are added game features, rather than just a resolution or frame-rate update. See Nintendo Australia’s Direct announcement for its description.

Should you buy the bundle or an upgrade pack?
The choice mainly depends on whether you already own the original Switch game and which additions matter to you.
- You already own the Switch game: Look for that title’s upgrade pack. For Jamboree, Nintendo says existing owners do not need to rebuy the base game. Selected packs, including the two Zelda upgrades, may also be available to eligible Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack members at no additional cost.
- You do not own the game: The Switch 2 Edition bundle combines the original game with its upgrade content, according to Nintendo UK. Check the local store listing to confirm what is included in your region.
- You want a particular feature: Compare the title’s added modes or content with its technical upgrades, and check whether the feature needs an accessory. For example, some Jamboree CameraPlay features need a compatible USB-C camera.
Prices, physical and digital formats, and membership terms can vary by region and change over time. Check your local Nintendo store before purchasing. Nintendo’s UK catalog explains the bundle and upgrade-pack paths; regional listings determine what is currently available to you.

What you need to play the added content
The additional Switch 2 Edition content requires a Nintendo Switch 2. Owning the original Switch game alone does not make the edition additions playable on the original console. For an upgrade pack, you also need the corresponding base game; for selected packs offered through Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack, membership and title-specific conditions apply.
