Images and descriptions that appeared online ahead of the scheduled test period seemed to show players working together to develop a planet, prompting reports to call the concept MMO-like. Nintendo did not confirm that interpretation or announce a finished game.
What Nintendo said the playtest was
On October 9, 2024, Nintendo announced a test of a new feature for Nintendo Switch Online. The public description was deliberately broad: it identified a service test, not a commercial game reveal. In July 2025, Nintendo described a later Playtest Program as a test of the same service it had tested in October 2024, according to GamesRadar+.
That distinction matters because the material that leaked offered a much more specific picture than Nintendo’s public announcement did. It was a glimpse of what appeared to be a test build, not confirmation that Nintendo was preparing to sell or release the depicted experience.
What the leaked material appeared to show
On October 21, 2024, Insider Gaming reported that images and descriptions of the test had appeared online and that Nintendo had issued DMCA takedowns against some copies. The reported description presented a collaborative planet-development concept: players would use creativity and gathered resources to develop a large planet.

The apparent Beacon-and-planet loop
In the leaked description, Beacons were tools for purifying and developing land. Players would repeat that process across a Planetary Block, gradually working on the broader world. The materials therefore suggested shared, ongoing activity rather than a conventional single-player game, but they did not establish what the finished service—if any—would be.
Was the leaked Nintendo playtest an MMO?
“MMO” was a press interpretation of the leaked material, not a genre label Nintendo publicly confirmed. The reported focus on many players collaborating on a shared planet helps explain why outlets described it as MMO-like. It does not prove the test was a finished MMO, that it would launch as a standalone game, or that Nintendo planned a commercial release. GamesRadar+ reported in July 2025 that Nintendo had not confirmed or denied the earlier interpretation and had not officially revealed what the test was for.

Did Nintendo ask testers not to share gameplay?
Yes. In an October 11, 2024 report, GameSpot reproduced a confidentiality request that selected participants reportedly received: “We request that you do not discuss or disclose content from either the Nintendo Switch Online: Playtest Program test software or website with others.” That is evidence Nintendo reportedly asked participants to keep both the software and website private; it does not mean the request prevented material from being shared.
Who could apply, and when did the test run?
The conditions below describe the historical 2024 application, not a current way to join. GameSpot reported that sign-ups were scheduled for October 10–15 and that the test was scheduled for October 23–November 5. Applicants needed an active Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack membership, had to be at least 18, and needed a Nintendo Account registered in an eligible territory. Nintendo’s planned maximum was up to 10,000 participants, according to GameSpot; that was a cap, not a verified count of people who ultimately took part.

Nintendo Wire reported that the 10,000 available places filled within seconds of applications opening. That is the outlet’s account of demand, rather than a separately verified final enrollment figure.
Contemporary coverage did not agree on the scheduled test dates: GameSpot and Nintendo Wire gave October 23–November 5, while Insider Gaming listed October 24–November 6. The leak was being reported on October 21, before the scheduled start dates cited in those reports, but the coverage does not establish the precise interval between the test opening and the first leaked material. It is more accurate to say the material appeared online early than to claim it leaked a specific number of minutes after launch.

- Three play modes: TV, tabletop, and handheld

What the leak does—and does not—establish
- Established by Nintendo’s public description: the program tested a new Nintendo Switch Online feature or service.
- Reported from participant-facing information: accepted testers were asked not to disclose material from the test software or website.
- Shown in leak reporting: images and descriptions appeared to depict collaborative planet development using resources and Beacons.
- Not established by those reports: that Nintendo confirmed an MMO, announced a commercial game, or released the leaked prototype as a finished product.
The July 2025 repeat test is useful context, but it does not turn the 2024 leak into a game announcement: Nintendo described the later round as a test of the same service, while the earlier material’s meaning remained unconfirmed in the cited reporting.
