If Overwatch 2 disconnects from Battle.net or a game server, first note the exact on-screen wording or error code and whether you play on PC, PlayStation, Xbox, or Nintendo Switch. The right steps depend on those details: Blizzard’s general connection advice is different from its console-specific guidance for LC-202. A disconnect by itself does not establish whether the cause is your device, network, account, or Blizzard’s service.
Record the error and what else is affected
Before changing settings, write down the exact message or code, your platform, and the approximate time it happened. Also note whether Battle.net or other games disconnected, and whether other devices using the same network stayed online. These observations can help narrow where to investigate, but none alone proves the cause.
Blizzard’s general Overwatch 2 connection troubleshooting guidance covers disconnections, lag, and rubber-banding. It recommends restarting the computer and optimizing the internet connection, and directs players with a specific error message to search for guidance on that error. Use the wording or code you recorded rather than assuming every disconnect has the same fix.
Try low-risk steps for a general disconnect
On PC
- Restart the computer, as Blizzard recommends in its general connection troubleshooting guidance.
- Check the connection to your router and whether other devices or services on the network are also losing connectivity. If the problem affects more than Overwatch 2, investigate the local network connection as well.
- If you use Wi-Fi, you can test the game over Ethernet if practical. This is an optional diagnostic: if the behavior changes, the wireless segment may be worth investigating, but the test does not guarantee a fix or prove the cause.
On console
For a general disconnect without an LC-202 code, record the exact error and search Blizzard support for that message. Do not apply LC-202-specific guidance automatically to a different code.

If the error is LC-202 on console
Blizzard’s LC-202 support guidance recommends checking firewall, router, and port settings; resetting network devices; optimizing a wireless connection; and running the console’s built-in connection test. Follow the guidance for your console and network rather than making unrelated account changes.
Do not unlink and relink a console account as a casual first troubleshooting step. Blizzard warns that disconnecting and reconnecting a linked console account can initiate a console cooldown, often 365 days. That is a possible account-linking consequence, not a disconnect-frequency statistic or a recommended fix.

Choose the next support step by the exact code
- Search Blizzard Support with the precise error wording or code. Blizzard’s general connection article directs players with a specific error to look for error-specific guidance.
- If the recommended steps do not resolve a console issue, Blizzard’s LC-202 guidance points players to the technical support forum or the console manufacturer.
- When asking for help, include the platform, exact error, time of the disconnect, whether other services or devices were affected, and the steps you already tried.
Blizzard’s Technical Support forum describes itself as a peer-to-peer troubleshooting space; posting there is not a promise of staff assistance. Forum topics dated October 7–8, 2026 include phrases such as “Lost Connection,” “Connection Error LC-202 – Cannot log into Overwatch 2,” and “Problem of connecting to servers.” Those user posts show that players have reported connection problems, but a forum index does not establish how widespread they are, confirm an outage, or show that the reports share a cause.

A disconnect from a Competitive match still counts as leaving. Blizzard’s Defense Matrix article says, “Remember, deliberately leaving or having a disconnection still counts as leaving.” Its advice is not to return to Competitive until you are confident the technical issue is resolved.

In a May 21, 2026 Technical Support forum reply, staff member Nicole-1893 said, “Overwatch applies the same penalty to players who disconnect, leave, or fail to connect to matches.” The reply also says those penalties cannot be overturned. If disconnects are recurring, troubleshoot before queueing again rather than assuming a penalty can be appealed or reversed.
